John O'Mahony: I accept that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: School Transport Scheme: Bus Éireann (7 May 2014)

John O'Mahony: Deputy Dooley I want to do this straight down the middle. I said it to Mr. Nolan and I am repeating it to Deputy Dooley, I do not want any reference to this. As he is entitled to do, Deputy Dooley has brought into the public domain that he is a dissenting voice from this decision. I want to put on record that the Committee on Transport and Communications got legal advice and it is the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: School Transport Scheme: Bus Éireann (7 May 2014)

John O'Mahony: The overall decision of the committee was to take the legal advice. The Deputy has stated publicly that he has dissented from that view, and he is perfectly entitled to do so. The decision that was taken is on the public record. We do not want a rerun of the arguments made in private session.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: School Transport Scheme: Bus Éireann (7 May 2014)

John O'Mahony: I apologise for the delay. We had some issues to clarify in our private meeting, which went over time. The purpose of this meeting is to engage with Bus Éireann in regard to the procurement process for the awarding of contracts under the school transport scheme. In the interest of transparency, I wish to put on record that I have previously tabled parliamentary questions relating to...

John O'Mahony: I certainly will and would welcome any reduction in charges.

Water Charges: Motion [Private Members] (6 May 2014)

John O'Mahony: I am glad to have the opportunity to debate and contribute to this motion on water charges and the implementation of a model of funding for water charges agreed between the Fianna Fáil-Green Party Government and the troika way back in 2010. I very much welcome the clarity the Minister has brought to the subject. Coming from a constituency in rural Ireland, I am frequently asked about...

Water Charges: Motion [Private Members] (6 May 2014)

John O'Mahony: They may be services, but at the end of the day they are far more than anything that is being paid on property down here. I would say they would adequately replace the charges or funding model for water charges that we are introducing here. I talk to people up there who pay between £1,200 and £1,500 per annum.

Water Charges: Motion [Private Members] (6 May 2014)

John O'Mahony: Perhaps they have. Sinn Féin now states that it put off individual water charges to houses until after 2016, so does that mean that people in Northern Ireland will be paying water charges in addition to the sums of £1,200 and £1,500 they are paying at the moment? Clarity is needed in Northern Ireland as well, and I hope that when Sinn Féin debates this, it will clarify...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Community Broadcasting: Discussion (30 Apr 2014)

John O'Mahony: This is the initial stage of our first presentation but in our private sessions the committee will take that on board as we get all the dynamics in this broadcasting area. It has been an enlightening afternoon. We talk about change coming down the track in broadcasting, and the witnesses illustrated that in their presentations. I thank all the witnesses for their contributions and for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Community Broadcasting: Discussion (30 Apr 2014)

John O'Mahony: Before we conclude, I wish to offer a couple of observations. From listening to the presentations and the questions which have arisen, it is clear that our guests all fill important niches in their communities. In the context of community TV and radio, there does not appear to be certainty and, as a result, there is an inability to plan. I am of the view that there is a need for change in...
