Seanad: Transport and Sport: Statements (20 Nov 2019)

Gerard Craughwell: People apply for grants and the Minister's officials assess those grants in an open and transparent way and the decisions are made accordingly. Let us stop the nonsense of "I got a grant a grant for you" or "We worked to get you a grant". The Minister is the only one who should be seen when grants are handed out.

Seanad: Transport and Sport: Statements (20 Nov 2019)

Gerard Craughwell: It should be the Minister or his successors. Over the past few days I have taken to the bicycle following a challenge in Dublin city and I invite the Minister to do the same. We learn some serious lessons as we cycle around Dublin.

Seanad: Transport and Sport: Statements (20 Nov 2019)

Gerard Craughwell: From I BIKE Dublin I thank Mr. Ciarán Ferrie and Mr. Oisín O'Connor for their assistance in accompanying me around the city. It is incredible that we have cycle lanes that go a couple of hundred yards and then disappear. There are cycle lanes along the quays, for example, that we share with bus lanes while cars fly past in the right-hand lane. People have discussed transport in...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Gerard Craughwell: We have again before this House a plethora of days allocated to the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill. I understand that the sponsoring Minister threw his toys out of the cot last week and would not allow the appointment of judges. This is ridiculous. It is an affront to everything going on in this country that we are wasting our time in this Chamber pushing through a Bill that nobody...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Gerard Craughwell: I am about to move on to the important issues. Last Saturday, on RTÉ radio, the Minister of State at the Department of Defence spoke about the emergency air ambulance service, which will be stood down for one day a week for the next four months.I heard him say, when pushed by the presenter, that he had become aware of the problem a couple of months ago. Either the Minister of State is...

Gerard Craughwell: I took away the word "lied".

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Gerard Craughwell: My point is very simple. For the joint Defence Forces and Department of Defence annual reports in 2015 and 2016, high-level groups were put together to report on the emergency air ambulance service. The Minister of State and the Department, and everybody and anybody under the sun, were aware of the fact there would be serious shortcomings down the line. The recommendations of those two...
