Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Access to Cash Bill 2024: Discussion (27 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: Work together.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Access to Cash Bill 2024: Discussion (27 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: Yes. I have two final points here. The banks will take issue with the fact that the independent operators - which have a huge number of ATMs in the State - are not being asked to share any of this burden. They will also raise issues, such as with the credit unions and An Post, which now has accounts but also operates as points for AIB and Bank of Ireland. What is the rationale for that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Access to Cash Bill 2024: Discussion (27 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: My final point on this is on the regulation of IADs. Head 10 of the Bill allows for the Minister to have the necessary powers to prohibit IADs from charging access fees if there is a change in the card scheme rules in the future. These are independent operators. They do not charge access fees at the moment. The legislation says that if they start to do it, the Minister can intervene and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Access to Cash Bill 2024: Discussion (27 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: Is this a kind of big stick provision? Is it the case that if independent operators dare to change their approach and to start charging domestic customers as well as international customers then we will take out the big stick and they will not be able to charge anybody? Is that what Mr. Palmer is saying?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Access to Cash Bill 2024: Discussion (27 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: Of course.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Access to Cash Bill 2024: Discussion (27 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: But would it have to be domestic and international, even though they are regulated? Does every fee AIB or Bank of Ireland introduce not have to be approved by the Central Bank at this stage? Once they are regulated could we not differentiate between international and domestic charges if the provision was used and Mastercard or Visa change the charging rules?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of the Access to Cash Bill 2024: Discussion (27 Feb 2024)

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (22 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: Since 2021, telecom providers have been hitting households with unfair and punitive inflation-linked price increases in the middle of their contracts. Providers such as Eir and Vodafone are hitting customers with co-ordinated price hikes at the rate of inflation, plus a further percentage increase on top of that. This is going to see Eir and Vodafone hiking their prices by 8% in April. ...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (22 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: To clarify, does the Tánaiste support the ban? I did not hear that.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (22 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: Sorry?

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: One thing is clear: we will get no change from the Tánaiste. In fairness he is consistent because the last time he was in government, that Government drove house prices off a cliff. Having been in for the last four years this Government has even surpassed the Celtic tiger period. The Tánaiste talked about sound bites. It is not a sound bite to say that house prices are running...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: We have a plan there. It is called social and affordable housing.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Feb 2024)

Pearse Doherty: Inné, chuir an Phríomh-Oifig Staidrimh níos mó drochscéil ar fáil d'oibrithe agus do theaghlaigh atá ag iarraidh dul ar an dréimire tithíochta. Tá praghsanna tithíochta anois níos airde ná mar a bhí siad le linn am an tíogair Cheiltigh. Is sampla eile é seo den teip ar phlean tithíochta an Rialtais....
