- State Airports (Shannon Group) Bill 2014 [Seanad]: Second Stage (25 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: The Bill has a misleading Title. It should be about the merger of a number of bodies related to Shannon Airport to streamline its development. This is what the Title would lead one to believe, but instead, the Bill is largely an attack on workers and their pension status. While it deals with the merger of these bodies to become the Shannon Group, this is not what has been a matter of grave...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Luas Cross City Line and Future of Public Transport in Dublin: National Transport Authority (25 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: I was asking for my own benefit. I have not seen the plans for Cork city or Limerick, for example. That is all I am saying. I do not dispute work is being done.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Luas Cross City Line and Future of Public Transport in Dublin: National Transport Authority (25 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: Due to the fact that the NTA is Dublin-based, it tends to see all that is going on there. It does seem disproportionate to me that every time we come here, we are talking about Dublin. Do we have plans for each of the main cities like Cork, Waterford or Limerick that need to be brought forward? I am not saying the funding is there but have we looked at each of these cities? Have we any...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Luas Cross City Line and Future of Public Transport in Dublin: National Transport Authority (25 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: Mr. Creegan confused me. He referred to when the works will be completed. The issue concerns what is identified for O'Connell Street during the works. There needs to be a space for taxi drivers on O'Connell Street. Will we be without a taxi presence on the street?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Luas Cross City Line and Future of Public Transport in Dublin: National Transport Authority (25 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: On O'Connell Street?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Luas Cross City Line and Future of Public Transport in Dublin: National Transport Authority (25 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: I thank Mr. Murphy and Mr. Creegan for the presentation. I welcome the progress that is being made. The link up between Cabra and St. Stephen's Green is important. I am glad to see that Dawson Street is being included because that would be handy for the likes of myself, from Broombridge, parking in Cabra and making my way here. That is a good development. Mr. Murphy mentioned business...

- Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report Stage (Resumed) (19 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: Amendment No. 45 recognises that there is a real problem where RAS tenants are in danger of losing their homes due to an inability to keep up with rents or other issues. When RAS was originally introduced many years ago, people were given a commitment that when they signed up to it they would get another RAS property or would be considered a priority for local authority housing. It was...

Dessie Ellis: Sinn Féin has tabled amendments Nos. 38, 39, 42 and 43, which deal with methods of deduction, hardship as a result of deduction, refusal of tenants to engage, the notification within ten days of a deduction from a tenant's social welfare payment and the compiling of a report within six months of deduction. Mandatory deduction from social welfare payments is a fundamental issue. At...
- Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report Stage (Resumed) (19 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: The Bill contains many good measures but it is my job to point out where I believe it has gone wrong and table amendments.
- Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report Stage (Resumed) (19 Jun 2014)
Dessie Ellis: There are cases where people cannot afford it. I understand somebody getting into very serious difficulty with arrears and coming to an arrangement whereby it is deducted from social welfare payments. However, it is wrong to legislate to make this mandatory and that is the big problem I have in this regard.
