Vote 21 - Prisons (15 Feb 2024) Catherine Murphy: With regard to Walter Scott House, which is a smaller facility than the one that was at Harcourt Square, things have changed owing to remote working, and hot desks and the like are far more prevalent than before the pandemic. Are there residual costs for Walter Scott House in relation to carparking?

Vote 21 - Prisons (15 Feb 2024) Catherine Murphy: I will ask a parliamentary question on that, so. On the coroner service, we passed legislation last night. I am not sure whether it has gone through the Seanad but the Dáil certainly passed Final Stage. What happens in this regard in terms of the regulatory impact assessment and requirements for additional staff? There are delays in the coroner courts. They really do affect people...

Vote 21 - Prisons (15 Feb 2024) Catherine Murphy: It is very expensive to keep somebody in prison. If we are to look at it from a financial point of view, apart from the personal impact on prisoners and ex-prisoners, it amounts to €88,000 per annum. Dr. Regan has described what happens and the targeting of particular prisons. One can say that this is really quite strategic. Would the witnesses say there is more support for a...

Vote 21 - Prisons (15 Feb 2024) Catherine Murphy: It is quite useful to have it said that all the services are in one place at the first point of engagement. We are acutely aware of the inadequacy of services in the community in terms of children, disability and mental health issues. We can see where it is going. If we do not spend the money there, we spend it later on, and possibly on multiple occasions if people end up in prison repeatedly.

Vote 21 - Prisons (15 Feb 2024) Catherine Murphy: The Department obviously does some work with the HSE on medical facilities within prisons. We heard about that earlier. I refer to the children's disability network teams. From what I have seen, some of the most dedicated parents have huge challenges and have ended up in hospital following attacks. It is more of a brass plate than it is anything else. The silo based on some of these...

Vote 21 - Prisons (15 Feb 2024) Catherine Murphy: I have met the most dedicated parents who cannot control a child who has a very significant disability. In one case the Garda have been called more than 20 times in the same year. The real-----

Vote 21 - Prisons (15 Feb 2024) Catherine Murphy: It is so important that the Department of Justice talks to people working on other areas of policy because otherwise we are just going to go around in circles on this.
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services Staff (15 Feb 2024)
Catherine Murphy: 400. To ask the Minister for Health the date on which the recruitment of the neurorehabilitation teams in CHO2, 4, 6 and 7 will commence. [7322/24]
- Transfer of Passenger Name Record Data: Motions (14 Feb 2024)
Catherine Murphy: The exchange of passenger data is important for Ireland and the wider EU law-enforcement communities. The transfer of PNR data relating to international flights has been common practice worldwide since the 9/11 attack. The EU has a number of agreements with third countries as a consequence of that. A past judgment by the ECJ showed that the EU is enforcing increasingly high standards for...
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Feb 2024)
Catherine Murphy: Every five years we are asked to fill out a census of population form so that the Government can plan for services. We are told that this is the reason people are asked to fill out the census form, which I would encourage everyone to do. However, there is no real evidence that there is a follow through in relation to services. In Kildare there is a real crisis in school places at both...

Catherine Murphy: The schools are full.
- Business Costs for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises: Motion [Private Members] (14 Feb 2024)
Catherine Murphy: Our aim is to have a strong economy and a fairer society. The small-to-medium sector is a critical part of that. There are a number of elements to the motion that need to be broken down. In the case of retail, there is no doubt that a different type of competition is now going on with so much happening online. That competition is causing problems for those business owners who have to...
- Road Traffic Bill 2024: Second Stage (13 Feb 2024)
Catherine Murphy: Road safety must remain an absolute priority for all of us. I welcome most aspects of the Bill. I have some difficulties with elements of it, which are not terribly different from the ones that have just been highlighted. Part 2 of the Bill seeks to overhaul the way penalty points are applied, or certainly the number of them that can be imposed at any given time. Under the new regime,...
- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (13 Feb 2024)
Catherine Murphy: On the same issue and the Government's approach to it, we have heard that resources are going to be provided to deal with these arson attacks. The best deterrent is probably seeing people brought to justice, that is, detected and prosecuted. However, that will require a strategy. The social media platforms play a huge role in the spread of information and disinformation. I have some...
