Human rights, as Senator Norris I am sure can say more eloquently than I, are of major importance and benefit to the community. I have had representations from the Irish Council of Civil Liberties and a host of other organisations which make very pertinent and strong...

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Second Stage (26 Nov 2008)

Jerry Buttimer: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil leis as ucht an cuireadh chuig cruinniú le h-oifigigh an Roinn Pobail, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta. The consensual approach taken by Opposition parties in the Dáil will continue in this House. While the Fine Gael Party welcomes the Charities Bill 2007 in principle, as noted by Deputy Ring, my party's spokesperson in...

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Second Stage (26 Nov 2008)

Jerry Buttimer: This is a glaring omission. This legislation has been a long time in gestation and reform of the charities sector is long overdue and necessary. I hope it will add to and enhance legislation in this area and, most important, protect those involved in the charities sector. As someone who is involved in sport and charity, I welcome the Bill. While this legislation will, if passed, introduce...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Nov 2008)

Jerry Buttimer: Will the Leader indicate why the House has not engaged in debates on the economy, on the increase in unemployment or on the cutbacks in education that were announced in the budget? I was asked questions on two of those three matters by 15 year old students of a school which I visited yesterday as part of the Oireachtas education programme. Perhaps the Leader will explain the reasons the...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Nov 2008)

Jerry Buttimer: I beg the Cathaoirleach's indulgence and I will conclude on this final point. We must make a distinction between the management and the employees of FÁS. Is it right for someone to spend $410 on a manicure and make-up? In all fairness, is that right? I think that €20 is enough to pay for a hair cut.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Nov 2008)

Jerry Buttimer: The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment must come into this House for a debate. I know she may be finding it hard to get over to this House and she is struggling in the job, but if she comes to this House we will reassure her that we have policies.
