- Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: I am sure she is a very unique person to Ms Hough. Unfortunately, and I do not say this to disparage, Valerie's story is not unique. I have heard many times about overmedication with powerful drugs, the importance for medical experts of giving a label and a diagnosis, and the lack of alternative therapies such as talk therapies. Valerie's experience in emergency departments is similar to...
- Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: It is a really important point as we saw it happening recently with the CAMHS in south Kerry. Another psychiatrist came in and asked what was going on. Only for that whistleblower, as he is being called, being brave enough to ask the question, the issue could have gone on much longer than it did. It is really important for people to ask what is going on. I thank Dr. Gijbels.
- Committee Report on Key Issues Affecting the Traveller Community: Statements (3 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: In 2019, when I was mayor of South Dublin County Council, I launched a report on Traveller mental health by the Clondalkin Travellers development group. The report found that nearly 80% of Travellers surveyed in south Dublin stated either they or someone in their family had suffered from depression. This compares with just 8% of the general population. The report identified the factors...

- Institutional Burials Bill 2022: Second Stage (2 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: As the Minister was delivering his opening statement, I was thinking of some of the interactions I have had with him on other Bills in the past when my knuckles turned white with anger - not directed at the Minister but for the sake of the women and children who suffered in these mother and baby homes. It is refreshing to see some movement on this Bill. It is welcome. The Minister and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: I thank our guests for being here. We have spoken an awful lot about the governance of CAMHS in south Kerry. I want to touch on probably the most important people, who are the children. I travelled to Tralee a few weeks ago and met parents and their children on the issues in south Kerry. Their stories are absolutely heartbreaking. I am going to relay one of them in as generic a fashion...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: I am sorry to cut across Mr. Fitzgerald. I know that we cannot speak about individual cases which was why my question was as general as possible. In a number of cases, parents and children feel that they were left out of the review process and that their personal testimonies were not taken on board. Are there any plans to go back and rectify this so that the voices of these children and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: In terms of the prescribing methods described earlier, is it normal practice to prescribe Prozac and other medications for children on a first visit to CAMHS?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: Would Dr. Burke accept that in some cases in CAMHS in Kerry, medication was considered in isolation and was seen as the only treatment available? It was the only treatment that was being given to children.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: In a number of cases, medication was inappropriately prescribed to children. Psychological supports were not made available in tandem with medication and yet the parents of the child to whom I referred earlier received a letter to say no harm was done the child. Something is not adding up here in terms of the letters that were sent to families and the treatment children received.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: South Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: HSE (2 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: Yes, but it was said earlier that it should never have happened without psychological supports also being put in place. In this particular case and in several other cases in Kerry, that just did not happen.
- Health Waiting Lists: Motion [Private Members] (1 Mar 2022)
Mark Ward: Tá mé chun iarracht a dhéanamh labhairt as Gaeilge do Sheachtain na Gaeilge. Bhí cruinniú dearfach agam inné le foireann an HSE san ionad cúraim phríomhúil i dTamhlacht. Tugadh cuireadh dom féachaint ar cad is féidir le hionad cúraim sláinte phríomhúil a chur ar fáil. I mBaile Átha Cliath Thiar Meán,...
