Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Energy Prices (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: It was encouraging to hear other members of Cabinet and Government stating that in the event of the introduction of windfall tax, we would be looking at it over the totality of the year so that it would be retrospective. That is welcome. I have another point in relation to something the Minister said at the end of August in an RTÉ "News At One" interview regarding such a measure...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I thank everybody for coming. I have met a number of the witnesses in the flesh over the past few years and a few on Zoom as well. It is nice to put the face to the name. We only have five minutes, which is very short. I would prefer to hear from the witnesses. I have two specific questions and then perhaps I could come in at the end again. One relates special school classes. The...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: Can I clarify that no schools have a choice in this? Is it applied in every school?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I, too, apologise. I had to leave to attend another meeting. I wish to follow up on the issue of employment. The difficulties we have in CHO4 are well known now. On average, it is taking eight to nine months to employ a home care worker, let alone therapists and whatever else. I am familiar with the Rainbow Club and how it successfully hired people in the recent past. Have any of the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: The HSE is notorious for telling us how difficult it is to get therapists. I know that is not always the case and lead-in times are nine to 12 months for it to hire a therapist, at best. Do the witnesses have experience of that in their organisations and how has it worked out for them?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: Has the Dublin 12 Campaign for Autism Inclusion had any major difficulty when it has required a therapist?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: The reason for the question was that I came across Ms O'Mahony and she has advertised posts in the past. I will not say she found people easily but a lot more easily than the HSE seems to be able to source staff. The HSE needs to see that and hear it. Turnaround times for us to employ therapists in community healthcare organisation, CHO, 4 are not working. It is like the situation...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: That is fine thanks.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: Many teachers I know would like to go into educational psychology. That may be something they could do in the latter stage of their degree or as a postgraduate course. It may be that they could specialise in a field, just as nurses do. That is worth considering. I invite our guests to comment on the difficulties in getting therapists. It may be easier for them to do so than it is for the HSE.

An Bord Pleanála: Statements (15 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I would be very slow to comment on any content in the Remy Farrell report or any of the allegations that have arisen. Due process will take effect and we need to be cognisant of that in this debate. Nonetheless, it is fair to register on the record our concerns regarding some of those allegations. The public must have trust in our planning system. People must trust in the impartiality and...
