Gerry Horkan: I think we are in the only place in the building with air conditioning so we are the only people who are not benefiting from the sunshine. How can we help duty free arrivals?

Gerry Horkan: Are there examples of it happening in Europe?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Norway is not in the EU. I wonder if there is an EU thing about it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: On the planning Bill, DAA wants that whenever it applies for planning permission, it will be granted and a quicker answer.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: I understand surface access and sustainability as regards aligning national bodies and staff and getting planning moving faster, supporting the balance between sustainability and climate change and being able to move around and bring people to this country, export and so on. On the expansion, regardless of the natural population growth, Mr. Jacobs mentioned South America and Asia. Is DAA...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: It is an uptapped market. I am around long enough to remember when Aer Lingus had two transatlantic flights to JFK and Boston airports and now I think it serves 14 or 16 destinations in the US. Is there more scope for Dublin Airport to be a mini-Dubai, heading west?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Okay. We have put Mr. Jacobs through enough at this stage. Would Mr. Jacobs like to make a contribution on anything else before I adjourn the meeting?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: We appreciate the fact that there was an interview with Claire Byrne that did not exactly endear Mr. Jacobs to the committee at the time, but he is here. It is great he is here. He has been open and knowledgeable about everything we asked. We had a certain number of constraints that were as much ours as the DAA's. I thank Mr. Jacobs and his colleague Mr. McQueen for being here. I will...

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Annita Demetriou, Speaker of the Cypriot House of Representatives (13 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: I thank Ms Demetriou for joining us. It is fantastic for our Chamber to have her here in Ireland. As our Leader said, we have more links than we might think. We both have a history with the British empire and of having an island that is split and divided. We both have a history of trying to be peaceful and get on with everybody and we are nowadays, along with Malta, the only island states...

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Gerry Horkan: There is a future for both of them somewhere.

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Gerry Horkan: I thank the Minister for his engagement. He and I had a brief chat outside the Chamber before the debate. This is very useful legislation but, as he outlined, it needs a little work. One of our colleagues in the House, who is both a former Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and a former Attorney General, has said it does not need much work.

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Gerry Horkan: I am absolutely in agreement with the concept of having a stronger punishment for spiking. The provisions in that regard are welcome. I congratulate Young Fine Gael, which is not something I often do. That will be chalked down and may be used against me at some point. I did not know Young Fine Gael was founded in 1977. I wonder whether Ógra Fianna Fáil being founded in 1975...

Seanad: Non-Fatal Offences against the Person (Amendment) (Spiking) Bill 2023: Second Stage (31 May 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Not as much as Senator Boyhan. It is important we keep a spotlight on spiking. I am delighted to be here speaking on the Minister's last day in the Department of Justice, for the moment at least. It is extremely important that the Department of Justice, under the command of the returning Minister for Justice, Deputy McEntee, takes this Bill from the Fine Gael group, which brought it...
