- Recent Flooding: Statements (Resumed) (19 Feb 2014)
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: I welcome the opportunity to discuss the dreadful flooding our country has experienced in recent months. I acknowledge the distress and trauma experienced by many families, businesses and landowners over the past several weeks and commend the emergency services on their excellent work in helping people. When urban areas are affected they always make the headlines. However, an area with...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Domestic and Sexual Violence: Discussion (19 Feb 2014)
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: How is our society doing compared to other European countries and worldwide from a statistical perspective? What can we do as a society to prevent this? Are public intervention and awareness campaigns the way to go? I know Mr. Hennessy referred to that in the submission. Would that be effective? Is there any evidence internationally that those kinds of public awareness campaigns are working?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Domestic and Sexual Violence: Discussion (19 Feb 2014)
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: I am coming to that. The problem is trying to decide which question to ask first. This area is something we have all been considering in terms of thinking about the Sexual Abuse and Violence in Ireland, SAVI, report, looking at Cosc and thinking about matters such as prevention and causes. The National Women's Council of Ireland representative was critical of Cosc and called for a SAVI II...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Domestic and Sexual Violence: Discussion (19 Feb 2014)
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: The National Women's Council's presentation was slightly critical of Cosc, stating there could be more it could achieve. I think it was the National Women's Council, but perhaps it was Safe Ireland.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Domestic and Sexual Violence: Discussion (19 Feb 2014)
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: I refer to the causes. The groups all deal with the outcomes of violence. Is there an overall cause? I spoke to somebody working in the Rape Crisis Centre and that person indicated that inevitably alcohol or drug abuse is involved in the majority of cases. Is that what the witnesses are finding? I do not know to whom that should be addressed specifically.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation and Export: Discussion (18 Feb 2014)
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: I was interested in the comments made on the community gain issue. Has either Bord na Móna or Element Power considered taking a slightly different approach, for example, providing an investment bond which communities or individuals could purchase? Have they considered the option of compensating people with free electricity? On Turn 180, I am interested in the delegates' thoughts on...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation and Export: Discussion (18 Feb 2014)
Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: Why are the midlands more suitable for providing onshore wind energy than other places? I would not have thought that the middle of Ireland was a good spot for wind speeds. Are the structures so high that the wind speed does not matter? What is the lifetime of the structure? When it comes to decommissioning, what will happen to the materials in the turbines? This is a technical question....
