- Written Answers — Department of Public Expenditure and Reform: Departmental Contracts (13 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: The Office of Public Works does not maintain a database or list of contractors for the purposes referred to. The OPW generally carries out its arterial drainage maintenance and flood relief activities through its own labour force and fleet of plant and machinery. In the event that the OPW has a requirement for hired plant, for example where additional or specialist equipment is needed, any...
- Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: That is a tax on wealth.
- Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: I am pleased to have the opportunity to make some remarks. What is absolutely clear in this debate is that those in the Sinn Féin Party would say anything, do anything and lie about anything as a means of taking control in Ireland.
- Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: I did not interrupt the Deputy yesterday. I notice that every time the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste inform the House of a jobs announcement on a Wednesday or a Thursday and every time they give the House information which is important for the people, the heads drop across the floor because they do not want to hear the good news.
- Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: Sinn Féin's tactic has always been to maximise its own political ends, as we know well from Northern Ireland. Those in Sinn Féin have no interest in the future or in getting the country back to work because it does not suit their political agenda. The Sinn Féin tactic has been exposed, particularly in its most recent pre-budget submission. Only two weeks ago Deputy McDonald...
- Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: I see the angry young man is back with us. The same decibels will not work.
- Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: It is fascinating. When one examines all of Sinn Féin's promises on VAT, the universal social charge and, as the Tánaiste noted, on wealth, the numbers do not add up. The Sinn Féin objective of getting €800 million from a wealth tax was based on a reply to one parliamentary question from the Department of Finance. That is brilliant. If ever there was an example of...
- Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: There is a good deal of similarity between the United Kingdom Independence Party in Britain and Sinn Féin. Sinn Féin and the UKIP are both anti-European parties, both ultra-nationalist parties and they both want their countries to fail.
- Confidence in the Government: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: The most recent antics of Sinn Féin's pre-budget submission and the antics with regard to the motion in the House this evening have shown that they have nothing to offer the people and they have been badly exposed.
- Seanad: Youth Work: Motion (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: Yes.
- Seanad: Youth Work: Motion (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: The net issue is that if there is a deficiency of numbers and the experienced people are required, this can be allowed on an exceptional basis. That is my understanding of it. If there is a deficiency of numbers coming forward and the credit union would need some people for their expertise, those people can remain. That is where the exclusion could kick in.
- Seanad: Youth Work: Motion (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: This amendment is consequential on the change in term limits for the board of directors from nine years to 12 years in aggregate in any 15-year period. We had a good debate about this yesterday. Given that the term limits are increased to 12 years under section 15, the reference to permissible limits under this Part also must be updated to refer to 12 years. This section requires the...
- Seanad: Youth Work: Motion (12 Dec 2012)
Brian Hayes: I indicated on Committee Stage that an amendment to this section was required to clarify that the reference to member in subsection (4) is a member of the board of directors, not a member of the credit union. Therefore, the reference to member in the section is being changed to director. This was done for clarity.
