Bríd Smith: I am sharing time with the Deputies beside me.

Assessment of Needs for Children with Special Education Requirements: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: No, you do not tell me how many minutes. You threw me the other day when you did that. I will be in control of my time.

Assessment of Needs for Children with Special Education Requirements: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: Sorry about that, Chair. I do want to welcome the motion and the issue Sinn Féin is highlighting. One of the main demands, that we should scrap the standard operating procedures, is one we would like to echo. This is a con job designed to massage the figures and give the impression that something is being done about the scandal that is the assessment of needs and how the State treats...

International Women's Day: Statements (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: People Before Profit sends solidarity to women across the world who are suffering from the absolute brutality of war, particularly in Ukraine, Yemen, Afghanistan and Palestine, and, indeed, Syria and beyond. Wars, like all emergencies, be they related to housing, health, poverty or climate change, always affect women and children disproportionately. Of the 365 days in the year, we focus on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy - Ambition and Challenges: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: I thank everybody for coming along and giving their thoughts. In the submission from the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, it spoke about significant community gain but what exactly does that mean? What communities is the Department speaking about? There are licences for legacy projects that should be first to be allowed go ahead. Will that be the case or is the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy - Ambition and Challenges: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy - Ambition and Challenges: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: Is Dr. Bourke saying that Shannon Estuary is privately owned and privately developed so we will have no say over it even though a task force has been created in the Department?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy - Ambition and Challenges: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: The Government has no control over it. Even though it is policy not to support liquefied natural gas terminals, they may well come into Shannon Estuary. That could be another factor that would affect what the port or the task force does.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy - Ambition and Challenges: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: I meant liquefied natural gas terminals.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy - Ambition and Challenges: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: That could have a significant impact on what this task force does, on what it can do and cannot do, if An Bord Pleanála grants planning permission. It is going to be a large project.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy - Ambition and Challenges: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: My last question related to the EU taxonomy. Ireland could vote against it, and it would be a good thing if we did because it flies in the face of the warnings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change about our continued use of fossil fuels and nuclear power. Will our guests comment on the point I made about liquefied natural gas terminals and how the horrible situation in Ukraine...

Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary)
(8 Mar 2022)

Bríd Smith: I thank the Minister. I know the Minister does not have a crystal ball and none of us do but given the seriousness of the geopolitical situation we are in, does the Minister agree that energy costs will continue to rise, and rise severely? Does he believe that this €200 subsidy to each household will be enough? I would argue that a lot more will need to be done for long-term...
