Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: When is that going to be lodged?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: I think the north apron and south apron figures supplied were upside down. That is just to prove I looked at it.

Gerry Horkan: I am not having a go.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Relatively speaking, there are few turboprop aircraft in Dublin Airport.

Gerry Horkan: I agree.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: That would be an extension to terminal 2 for the Aer Lingus operations and equally on terminal 1 to maybe extend pier D or what used to be called the 100 gates.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Mr. Jacobs touched on arrivals and duty-free. A person orders the duty-free items when in America, Morocco or wherever and then pays the DAA for it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Rather than buying the items from DAA's operation in Saudi Arabia or wherever, people are buying them from Dublin Airport. Also, they are not carrying the liquid, which is sensible. There is no duty-free within Europe, but could it be done from the UK?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Is that a common travel area thing?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: It would be interesting to develop it. As for the 100 ml limit and these new C3 machines, when the airport is fully compliant in terminal 2 and terminal 1 in 2024 and 2025, will we be able to bring more than 100 ml bottles through the system?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Okay.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Sometimes one only buys a bag because one has been given a gift of a bottle of something or other and all of a sudden one does not want to get rid of it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: What is the point of the limits?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Mr. Jacobs is saying the C3 machines cannot detect explosives.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: However, the machines do not necessarily detect the liquid. The 100 ml amount is potentially not very damaging, but a litre might be.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Yes. Obviously, it would not be much use for the return flight. At the same time, were the limit gone, one could bring somebody a gift and not have to worry about having a check-in bag but if it is there, it is there. Mr. Jacobs mentioned the 850 staff and said 500 were hired since the new year. Does that suggest only 350 of them are there longer than that? That seems a very high...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: In the 850 figure Mr. Jacobs gave us are 500 staff hired since Christmas. Is that right?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: That is out of the 850 figure.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: When Mr. Jacobs said 850 staff and 500 hired, not all the 500 are in the 850.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Security, Recruitment and Training at Dublin Airport: Discussion (14 Jun 2023)

Gerry Horkan: Of the 500 new hires how many are in the 850?
