- Seanad: Water Services: Motion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Fianna Fáil did plenty of it in government.
- Seanad: Water Services: Motion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Those I mentioned appeared on yesterday's list from the EPA detailing issues with cryptosporidium, turbidity, trihalomethanes, etc. The people of Connemara, in particular, who were expecting the regional water scheme would be very thankful to the Government for bringing Irish Water on board, because that scheme has been scrapped. We are still drinking water that may contain cryptosporidium...

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: We did.
- Seanad: Water Services: Motion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. Deputy Coffey spent a lot of time in here before the Christmas recess, and I have a funny feeling he will be spending a lot of time here talking about water this year as well. Nevertheless, I do welcome him back. Fianna Fáil's legacy was the HSE, but this particular Administration's legacy will be Irish Water. It seems to be a nightmare...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I welcome Mr. Gaynor. This is a new process. It is very important for this Parliament to have a mechanism that allows citizens to draw the attention of parliamentarians to certain matters and to make cases like that made by Mr. Gaynor. Perhaps he could clarify the nub of the petition he has brought to Parliament. What exactly would he like us to bring in? What type of legislation is he...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Is Mr. Gaynor aware of any solutions that are being availed of by those who retired in 2014 and are now facing this anomaly because they do not have State pensions?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Would Mr. Gaynor like to see a change in the legislation so that those people can retire normally at the age of 65?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Okay.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: My question is on the basic arithmetic, and goes back to the question on figures raised by Deputy Boyd Barrett. Mr. Gaynor said that around 1,400 people join the pension system in this way every year, and the day after their 65th birthday they become eligible for the State pension. There is a sense that the change was brought in to save a lot of money. However, if the number increases for...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It is included.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Yes. There is some saving in terms of the pension that would have been payable. Jobseeker's allowance is paid, so there is possibly only a saving of a couple of hundred thousand euro for the State. Is there a financial benefit to the State? I am not sure whether Mr. Gaynor has any thoughts on the matter.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It might be a useful to ask the Department to calculate the saving and to calculate how much of this is offset by lost tax revenue and the cost of putting somebody on jobseeker's allowance for nine months.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Ról agus Cúram: An Choimisinéara Teanga (14 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Fáiltím roimh an gCoimisinéir agus an tUasal Ó Coisdealbha. Fáiltím freisin roimh cheapúcháin an tUasal Ó Coisdealbha. Ceapaim gurb í seo an chéad uair go bhfuil Colm ag dul os comhair choiste sa ról seo. Tá ceisteanna i réimsí éagsúla a bhaineann leis an méid atá dhá phlé, mar...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Ról agus Cúram: An Choimisinéara Teanga (14 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Baineann an dara réimse ceisteanna leis an gcomhoibriú a fhaigheann an coimisinéir ó na comhlachtaí atá cláraithe cheana agus na Ranna Stáit. Leagadh imscrúdú áirithe ón gcoimisinéir os comhair an chomhchoiste seo agus bhí éisteachtaí againn, go háirithe leis an Roinn Coimirce Sóisialaí. Bhraith...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Ról agus Cúram: An Choimisinéara Teanga (14 Jan 2015)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Ba mhaith liom ceist a chur a chuir muid ar na hombudsmen éagsúla eile a tháinig isteach. Is dócha gur scrúdú é seo ar cé chomh maith is atáimid ag feidhmiú mar chomhchoiste atá ag obair leis na hombudsmen éagsúla. Luaigh an coimisinéir an ról a bheidh ag an gcomhchoiste ó thaobh comhlachtaí a...
