Martin Ferris: He had no way other than to go to the courts; that was all he had left. He told me he could not afford to go through the courts and he finds himself in the position where he has lost his compensation. He was offered partial compensation. Despite the fact that evidence was given by the IFA leadership in the area in support of him, the determination was made by the Minister on the advice...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea Fisheries Sustainability: Discussion with Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (6 Dec 2012)
Martin Ferris: That is the point. They may migrate someplace else. I was in New Bedford recently. I visited an institute which is undertaking scientific analyses in different parts of the sea. A cyclical pattern implies the fish have moved to a different area.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea Fisheries Sustainability: Discussion with Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (6 Dec 2012)
Martin Ferris: The Minister's replies have covered much of what I had wanted to raise. It is commendable that the Minister has a management plan for all sectors in the fishing industry. I am concerned about the Commission's proposal for deep cuts. The battle will be about the scientific evidence prepared by the Minister's Department, in consultation with the sector. If the scientific evidence stands up,...
- Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Animal Health and Welfare Bill 2012: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Dec 2012)
Martin Ferris: Many of us were encouraged by parents to buy animals when starting off in life at the age of 13, 14 or 15. I do not see anything wrong with the practice; it gives a young person a sense of independence and responsibility. Most farmers' sons will have bought animals in their early teens. This is part of their development. It encourages respect for the animal and self-sufficiency.

- Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Animal Health and Welfare Bill 2012: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Dec 2012)
Martin Ferris: The Minister referred to horse fairs. These are primarily associated with Traveller culture. Most 14, 15 and 16 year old Travellers that I know have horses. It is a cultural practice. I fully accept that there are those who have ill treated animals on having acquired ownership but one must not generalise. One should not penalise an entire community or everybody under 16 because of the...
