Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Options for Constitutional Change (18 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: Points have been made about the committee being farcical and pro-abortion. One member referred to 1916 and asked if it is what our forefathers gave their lives for. The people who fought in 1916, certainly in the case of James Connolly, were advocates of women's rights and I assume would have been open to women having bodily autonomy. The sands have shifted in society. People who had a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Options for Constitutional Change (18 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: By the way, it is not satisfactory to do this in the evening after a long session.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Options for Constitutional Change (18 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: My point is that we may need to return to this next week. I want to make another point. We heard a lot about Savita Halappanavar today. It would have been good if this committee made the decision that the eighth amendment would be repealed before the anniversary of her death. The Oireachtas has had five years to deal with this. Although some people say they are not ready, we agreed on 11...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Options for Constitutional Change (18 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: Delegates representing the World Health Organization, general practitioners, etc., have all testified already. I do not really understand why people would not be capable of making a decision on this now unless they wanted it to be linked to some restriction which they think will make their vote more palatable. There are dangers in that. We should agree on module 1 that there should be a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Options for Constitutional Change (18 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: We have made one decision but when will the process be continued? The public will want to know that. The clerk has circulated a proposal and it would be good if we agreed to consider when we are going to continue with these options or------

Water Services Bill 2017: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: Opposition to water charges is Trotskyism.

Water Services Bill 2017: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: For swimming pools. We have said it previously.

Water Services Bill 2017: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: It is strange that we are here on a quiet morning with very few people present for a debate on what was one of the most politically toxic issues in Ireland, the issue of the water charges. It must stick in the craw of the Taoiseach and a number of other people at the top of Fine Gael to have to refund people and effectively declare the end of water charges. I will split my speech in two....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Crisis Pregnancy and Primary Care: Irish College of General Practitioners (12 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. I want to ask a number of questions. If a woman in one of the witnesses' surgeries decides on an abortion, have the witnesses ever told them it is illegal and they cannot have an abortion in this country? Has that woman ever said, "Okay, I won't have an abortion then"?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Crisis Pregnancy and Primary Care: Irish College of General Practitioners (12 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: What I meant was, if a doctor says that to a woman, is it likely to put a woman off having an abortion? We regularly hear it argued in Ireland that the eighth amendment stops people having abortions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Crisis Pregnancy and Primary Care: Irish College of General Practitioners (12 Oct 2017)

Ruth Coppinger: The point I was getting at is whether the witnesses think the fact it is illegal has ever stopped a woman from having an abortion. I will move on. If a woman tells Dr. O'Shea or Dr. Hanley that she does not have the money to travel but has made up her mind to have an abortion, are they allowed to say anything about the availability of medical abortion pills which would save her that journey?
