Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jan 2014)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I just want to acknowledge the young people from the Sheriff Street CDC in the Visitors Gallery whom I met earlier. I referred to them earlier when speaking on the youth guarantee. They were just a moment too late to hear my contribution.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jan 2014)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Concerning all the problems we heard repeated over and over on television and radio this morning regarding the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission and the Committee of Public Accounts etc., one of the greatest problems facing the country is that of youth out of work, with no work, not in training and with no possibilities. The scale of that challenge is enormous. We are talking...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Jan 2014)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Since we are talking about the debacle in the Central Remedial Clinic and the charities sector, I wish to alert Senators that the Taoiseach's nominee, Senator Mary Ann O'Brien, wrote a pamphlet on the implementation of the Charities Act 2009 - the how, why and when. It is an excellent paper which was debated in this House. Sometimes I think we have imagined memories and real memories which...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: General Scheme of Education (Admission to Schools) Bill 2013: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jan 2014)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I do not have a question. I just want to say that the members of the panel are the most articulate, passionate, informed and alert group of people to have come before us in my short time as a member of this committee. I congratulate them on that because that is what this process is supposed to be about. We then try to influence the Bill by bringing into being the witnesses' suggestions. I...

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I caution against doing that. I know the point Ms Duggan is trying to make, and she is right about equal status and that children are children regardless of how they come on this earth, but what she said is not true. They are generalisations. I felt her submission was somewhat generalised in parts. It is not a criticism; it is a caution.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: General Scheme of Education (Admission to Schools) Bill 2013: Discussion (4 Dec 2013)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: There is a mindset here, although it is not an argument for today in the committee. However, there is a mindset. I have been an educationalist all my life and I believe in the seamlessness of it. Great teachers are great teachers no matter where they are. I do not believe that somebody in the vocational education system cannot go on to third level and become a great academic, although,...
