[18274/14]

Written Answers — Department of Environment, Community and Local Government: Water Services Provision (17 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: 169. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government the reason Irish Water has failed to afford the same urgency to the construction of the Ballina Knockmore water mains rehabilitation scheme which was prioritised and approved by him with a grant allocated of €5 million by him in the first half of 2013 in circumstances when businesses and residents in the affected...

Ambulance Service: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (16 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: Legitimate questions and concerns have been raised on foot of the motion. However, it is ironic that the party across the House is moving it when it has sent the chickens home to roost on this and so many other issues wreaking havoc on society. Out of service to the people and to ensure they are getting a proper ambulance service, the matter must be examined. I refer to a number of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Design of Ballot Papers: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (16 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: I am looking at the specimen ballot paper. Referendums differ and giving too much detail may be prejudicial to the matter being put to the people. Underneath, we could ask whether people approve of the proposal to abolish the Seanad. There were multiple parts to it but that is what would have happened. People would have been clear in that situation. It is always an issue of legalese. It...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: EU Scrutiny Report and Future Priorities and Challenges: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (16 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: I welcome Mr. John McCarthy and the other witnesses. Last Monday, the Taoiseach launched the report of the Commission for Economic Development for Rural Areas chaired by Mr. Pat Spillane. That report sets out measures to be taken to address rural decline. Much of the job of work will fall to the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. What practical steps are being...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: EU Scrutiny Report and Future Priorities and Challenges: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (16 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: I had cause to tic-tac with the Department and the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources just on that point. The issue appeared to be thrown back to the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government as it is a planning issue and the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources is looking at other matters. The position may have advanced since...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: EU Scrutiny Report and Future Priorities and Challenges: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (16 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: And on rural water.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: EU Scrutiny Report and Future Priorities and Challenges: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (16 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: Why; do we not have time?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: EU Scrutiny Report and Future Priorities and Challenges: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (16 Apr 2014)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: EU Scrutiny Report and Future Priorities and Challenges: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (16 Apr 2014)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: EU Scrutiny Report and Future Priorities and Challenges: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (16 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: I think the Chairman is being unreasonable. There are only a few of us left and I would be interested to hear the answer rather than-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (15 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: As local authorities operate at the moment they do not sell all houses. Some are special units for the elderly or people with disabilities. For the most part they sell houses as they develop estates and I believe this system works.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (15 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: NAMA has indicated that of the stock it has offered up for social housing only half has been taken up by either the council or the housing associations. In other words, only half has been of interest. I am keen to hear the comments of the deputations on that in 30 seconds.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (15 Apr 2014)

Michelle Mulherin: I welcome the witnesses. Perhaps they would outline the policy on one-off rural housing which is provided by local authorities that have no money. This is pertinent in County Mayo. There are people in substandard housing who could do with a house and who have a site but have nowhere to go. On the issue of tenant purchase, it was not clear to me from what Mr. Jerome Casey said whether he...
