- Seanad: Finance Bill 2011 (Certified Money Bill): Report and Final Stages (29 Jan 2011)
Mary White: I believe that not accepting this recommendation is a failure of the democratic process. While there were several abstentions on the civil partnership Bill, it was overwhelmingly passed by both Houses. I am disappointed that on the last day of this Seanad we cannot be magnanimous in accepting this recommendation.

Mary White: While this section provides for capital acquisitions tax, inheritance and gift tax, it has nothing to do with small business. Ireland, despite was has been said, is positive when it comes to new businesses. According to the World Competitiveness Yearbook, it remains an attractive place in which to do business. In the competitiveness league table it is in first place in respect of corporate...

- Seanad: Finance Bill 2011 (Certified Money Bill): Committee Stage (Resumed) (29 Jan 2011)
Mary White: I am delighted to welcome the Minister and it was a pleasure to hear his exemplary speech yesterday. Despite the ranting and raving from the other side of the House, there is no doubt the economy is beginning to grow and thrive again. I am completely optimistic on that front. My job as a politician is to inspire hope in people. As a business person, I would like to raise the issue of the...

- Seanad: Finance Bill 2011: Second Stage (28 Jan 2011)
Mary White: By nature I am an optimist, but I shudder daily when I hear the negative and doomsday language from almost everybody on the other side of this Chamber. I do not know how as politicians, whose natural inclination should be to inspire hope in the electorate and the people of this country, they can verbalise and utter such brutal words regarding the disastrous state of the country. If they...

Mary White: The figures for the last quarter of the year are very encouraging, because there has been growth in GDP and GNP. The recovery is being driven by the export sector, underpinned by the significant improvements in competitiveness that have taken place. As the Minister said this morning, the private sector drove the improvement in competitiveness in the markets and the Government drove...

- Seanad: Finance Bill 2011: Second Stage (28 Jan 2011)
Mary White: I draw attention to how competitive we are. The world competitiveness year book suggests that Ireland remains an attractive place to do business. As I have said many times over recent years, our market here is so small it cannot support a business that wants to grow and employ people unless we sell goods, services and products to people outside of our tiny country. Unless we export goods...
- Seanad: Finance Bill 2011: Second Stage (28 Jan 2011)
Mary White: They should not just engage in political debate and in wasting time. I have had the honour over the past eight years to be the nominee of the Irish Exporters Association for the Seanad and am pleased to have been offered that distinction again. This week I attended the launch of the report, Trading with the Asia-Pacific Region 2011-2015, produced by my nominating body, the Irish Exporters...

Mary White: The front page of the The Examiner today carries a story on the increasing incidence of suicide among the elderly, while page 2 of The Irish Times carries the headline " 'Growing trend' of suicide among older people". How many times have I mentioned this subject in a passionate way? At the Joint Committee on Health and Children I pleaded with the former Minister for Health and Children,...

- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jan 2011)
