Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: This was the indicated Sinn Féin position.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: Rubbish.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: We have to say it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: Dodgy money from the masters of dodgy money.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: The masters of dodgy money.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: The rollercoaster that I thought happened a few years ago when the guy across the Atlantic broke every law with impunity keeps going. In Britain today the lawlessness has been shown with the Supreme Court ruling. We welcome that. I also believe we are not immune to it here in view of the public services card and the lawlessness it produced. The response from the Department, along the lines...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: There is no need to burst the bubble.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: And three in a row.

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2019: Committee Stage (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: Sinn Féin welcomes the Bill. At last we will get some recompense for people who have been left stranded, our self-employed, and they will have some supports. We very much welcome that. Senator O'Reilly and I get well but I would take issue with the idea there is a cohort of people who are out to screw the system.

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2019: Committee Stage (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: Yes. We have to pass Bills and make laws on the basis that everybody seeks to do their best and has good intentions. We do not legislate for the one or two people who not operate on that basis, rather we legislate for the good of communities and families. When I heard the word “prescribed” mentioned it brought me back to the world of medics and nursing. We prescribe this and...

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2019: Committee Stage (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: Senator Higgins is dogged and has a great eye for tiny detail. It has taken me three years to grasp that. The word "an" or any other small word that is missing from text or added to it raises the Senator's antennae.

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2019: Committee Stage (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: They are very important. The smaller the word the more importance it can have. For me, the word "an" means exclusive or just one. The phrase "any reasonable" allows room for manoeuvre. All of our lives manoeuvre in different ways and we need to allow that. Why has the word "reasonable" been removed? The realist in me would say there is a reason for that removal so perhaps the proposers of...

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2019: Committee Stage (24 Sep 2019)

Maire Devine: This is a very worthwhile amendment and quite apt in view of the Data Protection Commissioner's report, which I believe the Minister intends to challenge following advice from the Attorney General's office that this is lawful, despite the Data Protection Commissioner saying it is unlawful. A lot of unlawful activity is being found out in Britain but the Attorney General advised that...

Seanad: CervicalCheck Tribunal Bill 2019: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: I support the amendment. I also refer to the unfortunate blunders that seem to be repeated in the cervical screening programme. The news from last night further undermines the programme and we cannot afford it. In the words of Deputy Louise O'Reilly of Sinn Féin, it is incredibly regrettable. Surely the HSE should have informed these Houses as soon as it discovered this glitch in...

Seanad: CervicalCheck Tribunal Bill 2019: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: I thank the Minister for his update on the IT glitch. Many women will view one blunder as unfortunate but a second blunder involving 800 cases is carelessness. The Minister referred to the Scally standards for extra capacity. Have some of the previous companies that took on this work been found lacking and let go contract-wise? How many of the previous companies that were at fault been...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: National Risk Assessment (11 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: Well said, Mark.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Proposed Legislation (11 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: I will try to be less cranky. The Minister of State has got an expanded brief today. As the other Members are in absentia, I know the response will probably not be very satisfactory but I thank him for coming to the House. By way of background, in 2012, an expert group was appointed to review the Mental Health Act 2001 by the then Minister of State, Kathleen Lynch, and in 2015, a total of...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Proposed Legislation (11 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: It is as if they cannot allow any kudos to be given to Sinn Féin or other legislation proposed by the Opposition, including in terms of many money messages.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Proposed Legislation (11 Jul 2019)

Maire Devine: I cannot say that it has, and the Minister of State did not expect me to say it did, but I thank him for the response. I would love an audit to be done on legislation proposed by those Members in opposition to see what legislation has been blocked. My sense is that everything is being blocked. I know the money message is being used and abused, and there have been questions over that. These...
