[46157/22]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Transport Issues: Engagement with Minister for Education (21 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister for attending. I do not want to rehash the discussions that have gone before. Ultimately, the recent announcement was motivated by the right reasons and was very much welcome. The nub of the issue is the children who have been displaced, to whom the Minister alluded. I listened to the Minister's interview last night on "Prime Time" in which she stated that the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: School Transport Issues: Engagement with Minister for Education (21 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I would like to ask a supplementary question about the budget discussions that will be going on. If I were booking a bus to matches or for an event, and the Minister was a schoolteacher so she is familiar, I would book it months in advance, ordinarily. Maybe it is just the optimist in me, but I hope there will be good news in the budget next week about this. Can we take an optimistic...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Energy Prices (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: 60. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the engagement he has had with the Minister for Finance regarding a windfall tax on energy companies’ earnings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [45676/22]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Energy Prices (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: This question was submitted prior to the EU meeting referred to by Deputy Stanton. What engagement has the Minister had with the Minister for Finance regarding a windfall tax on energy companies?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Energy Prices (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I should have said from the outset that we all know the backdrop to the discussion we are having. Some people might paint the windfall tax as a panacea for all our woes, which it certainly will not be. Many commentators have more or less said that in the past few weeks. An article I read said that the best benefit of a windfall tax might be in the name of social cohesion. I am not so sure...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Energy Prices (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: It was encouraging to hear other members of Cabinet and Government stating that in the event of the introduction of windfall tax, we would be looking at it over the totality of the year so that it would be retrospective. That is welcome. I have another point in relation to something the Minister said at the end of August in an RTÉ "News At One" interview regarding such a measure...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I thank everybody for coming. I have met a number of the witnesses in the flesh over the past few years and a few on Zoom as well. It is nice to put the face to the name. We only have five minutes, which is very short. I would prefer to hear from the witnesses. I have two specific questions and then perhaps I could come in at the end again. One relates special school classes. The...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: Can I clarify that no schools have a choice in this? Is it applied in every school?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I, too, apologise. I had to leave to attend another meeting. I wish to follow up on the issue of employment. The difficulties we have in CHO4 are well known now. On average, it is taking eight to nine months to employ a home care worker, let alone therapists and whatever else. I am familiar with the Rainbow Club and how it successfully hired people in the recent past. Have any of the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: The HSE is notorious for telling us how difficult it is to get therapists. I know that is not always the case and lead-in times are nine to 12 months for it to hire a therapist, at best. Do the witnesses have experience of that in their organisations and how has it worked out for them?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: Has the Dublin 12 Campaign for Autism Inclusion had any major difficulty when it has required a therapist?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: The reason for the question was that I came across Ms O'Mahony and she has advertised posts in the past. I will not say she found people easily but a lot more easily than the HSE seems to be able to source staff. The HSE needs to see that and hear it. Turnaround times for us to employ therapists in community healthcare organisation, CHO, 4 are not working. It is like the situation...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: That is fine thanks.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: Many teachers I know would like to go into educational psychology. That may be something they could do in the latter stage of their degree or as a postgraduate course. It may be that they could specialise in a field, just as nurses do. That is worth considering. I invite our guests to comment on the difficulties in getting therapists. It may be easier for them to do so than it is for the HSE.

Written Answers — Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Energy Policy (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: 103. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment if he will provide an update on his Department’s policy on supporting the development of anaerobic digestion plans for electricity production; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [45675/22]

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Taxi Licences (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: 199. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if assistance will be provided to a person (details supplied) whose taxi license lapsed due to a serious illness and who now wishes to renew the license but is having difficulty doing same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [45898/22]

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Education and Training Boards (20 Sep 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: 328. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the measures that she will implement to ensure that the delays endured since October 2021 by retired members of the Cork Education and Training Board do not happen again (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [45637/22]
