Paddy Burke: Various stakeholders have been before this committee but none has taken responsibility for the increase in costs. It is nobody's fault that cost of premiums has risen by 70% in the past three years, which is a staggering figure. According to the submission from the Personal Injuries Assessment Board, PIAB, the figures show that personal injuries motor claims volumes and average award values...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Cost of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Sep 2016)

Paddy Burke: When the premiums went down, one would think that the cost of awards would go down too. We have heard that whiplash awards in Spain are around €3,000 while they are approximately €15,000 here. Does Mr. Watkins think that the awards should also have dropped?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Cost of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Sep 2016)

Paddy Burke: Mr. Priestley has acknowledged that the 70% increase in the cost of insurance in the past three years is excessive but has argued that there is no correlation between the calculation of premiums and the awards made by the board.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Cost of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Sep 2016)

Paddy Burke: There are more cars on the road and there are more people paying premiums. Road safety has improved, as has the state of the roads. The country has become more efficient. The courts are more efficient. The PIAB has said it is not dealing with more claims than was the case heretofore and that the costs awarded have not increased. Why does Mr. Dunne then agree with the increase of 70% in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Cost of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Sep 2016)

Paddy Burke: The Chairman asked many of the questions that I had intended to ask. I fully support his recommendation that the transcripts should be sent to the Central Bank and the various other bodies. Will Ms Murphy recap on some of the issues? Is more competition the answer? Ms Murphy is saying that a cartel is in operation. Is she also saying there is more competition in all other European...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Cost of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Sep 2016)
