Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: My final question relates to the overall programme itself. Four years ago it was paused. Does the HSE envisage that the programme could recommence under the recommendations if they are fulfilled and carried out, and with the consent of medical professionals and the women who have suffered terribly in relation to this? Is it envisaged that the programme could recommence in the future?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: What I am taking from that is that the programme could be recommenced in the future. How prevalent is this procedure in Britain or mainland Europe?

Gino Kenny: In Dr. Murphy's experience, has the procedure been banned in any country around the world by a government or health authority?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: Does it cause Dr. Murphy concern that various countries have paused the programme? There are obviously concerns not only in this country but elsewhere that a medical procedure could be detrimental to somebody's health.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if her attention has been drawn to the many schools that are required by her Department to open an ASD unit that will not have any staff members with specialised qualifications to cater for students in the unit; if her attention has been drawn to the many teachers who applied for the Graduate Diploma in Education of Pupils on the Autism...

Joint Committee On Health: Resourcing and the Provision of Services at the Linn Dara CAMHS Unit: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: I thank all our guests this morning. My first question is on the nine posts at Linn Dara that have been advertised. How many of them have been filled thus far?

Joint Committee On Health: Resourcing and the Provision of Services at the Linn Dara CAMHS Unit: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: Okay. How confident is the HSE those 11 beds in Linn Dara will open come September?

Joint Committee On Health: Resourcing and the Provision of Services at the Linn Dara CAMHS Unit: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: Okay. This is not a criticism. I understand there are mitigating circumstances in the health services and especially mental health ones. There are reasons this is happening but why was it not envisaged that this could happen again? It happened four or five years ago and the same situation has arisen again. Surely with facilities such as Linn Dara, which is a vital service, this is down...

Joint Committee On Health: Resourcing and the Provision of Services at the Linn Dara CAMHS Unit: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: Obviously, to fill that gap will take a considerable amount of time.

Joint Committee On Health: Resourcing and the Provision of Services at the Linn Dara CAMHS Unit: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: That will go on for a considerable amount of time, I gather.

Joint Committee On Health: Resourcing and the Provision of Services at the Linn Dara CAMHS Unit: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: I have one final question. I know it is a difficult question, but for those families and young people who use vital services such as Linn Dara, when the beds are reopened come September, could the same issue with recruitment and retention of staff arise again in three to four years' time? Obviously, if seven beds are not being used, young people who need intervention are not getting it, and...

Joint Committee On Health: Resourcing and the Provision of Services at the Linn Dara CAMHS Unit: Discussion (28 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: That is a very important point. There is no doubt that graduates want to work in the Irish health system, but because of circumstances regarding the proximity to the workplace, rent and so forth, it is not viable. If it was made viable for graduates, they would work in the Irish public health system. Circumstances are not allowing them to do that. If those issues were addressed, we would...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (23 Jun 2022)

Gino Kenny: In 2019, medical cannabis was recognised as a medical intervention. That was underpinned by legislation by the then Minister for Health, Deputy Harris. Nine months ago the medical cannabis access programme commenced. Many of us who campaigned for that programme were joyous. Since then only 12 patients have been prescribed medical cannabis under prescription for the first time under the...
