- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: I am making this point because it is important. Will the Deputies concerned be there to lift the fines or the increased interest for those individuals they are telling to break the law? They are forcing them down a cul-de-sac. That is irresponsible politics. It is playing politics with this issue. It is not being real with the facts. We need to extend the deadline and bring in the...

Brian Ó Domhnaill: -----but we have to be realistic with where we are going in this debate. Let us get the Minister into the House to explain the situation.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: That is not true.
- Seanad: Direct Payment Schemes (27 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit go dtà an Teach. Baineann an rún seo le scéim atá tábhachtach do fheirmeoirà agus do chúrsaà talmhaÃochta go ginearálta. This matter is self-explanatory and I call on the Minister of State to update us on the reopening of the agri-environment options scheme for 2012. When the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Deputy Coveney, was...
- Seanad: Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union: Statements (14 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: Like other speakers, I am delighted to have an opportunity to contribute to this important and significant debate. It is also timely, given that the people will shortly be asked to vote in a referendum that will be significant both to Ireland and the European Union. The EU fiscal compact has been designed to prevent a repeat of the Greek debt crisis, of which we are all well aware, in any of...
- Seanad: Veterinary Practice (Amendment) Bill 2011 [Dáil]: Committee and Remaining Stages (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: I thank the Senator for tabling the amendment which I regard as sensible and practical and which would be welcomed in farming circles. I note the contents of the Department's regulatory impact assessment which accompanies the legislation. Moreover, in his Second Stage speech in this Chamber some weeks ago the Minister mentioned that procedures such as the scanning of cattle and sheep, bovine...
- Seanad: Veterinary Practice (Amendment) Bill 2011 [Dáil]: Committee and Remaining Stages (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: I am merely raising the question. I do not wish to take away from the amendment, which I support. I await the Minister's response.
- Seanad: Veterinary Practice (Amendment) Bill 2011 [Dáil]: Committee and Remaining Stages (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: I acknowledge what Senator Barrett has said. It is a sensible resolution to leave it to the Minister to bring in regulations in this area. I accept what the Minister said also. We must be mindful of the fact that we are dealing with animal welfare. As a parliamentarian, in the past I was often critical of Ministers, including some of our own, who brought in regulations after the primary...
- Seanad: Veterinary Practice (Amendment) Bill 2011 [Dáil]: Committee and Remaining Stages (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: This amendment was important because it raised the issues concerned. Perhaps when those regulations are being prepared at a later date and the Minister is deliberating over representations we make to him, he will take into consideration what has been said.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: I want to refer to the manner in which the Minister for Education and Skills and the Government representatives tried to create drama when announcing the school building programme. He tried to recreate projects that were previously announced.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: In fact, very many schools in County Donegal were left off the agenda. Perhaps Senator Harte should visit his local secondary school, St. Eunan's College, where the then Minister, Mary Coughlan, and the Fianna Fáil Government brought the project to the tender document stage but what did the Minister, Deputy Ruairà Quinn, and Senator Jimmy Harte do? They did not put in on the list.

Brian Ó Domhnaill: There are 700 young people in his own town who will suffer as a result of that.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: We need to invite the Minister for Education and Skills to come to this House to tell us the reason that projects which were so near to the tender stage now have to wait another six years?
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: How can that be fair? That is not fair. That is not a new system, that is playing politics. I heard a number of Senators say in their own constituency, where the Labour Party has got votes, that schools have been delivered. That is not the way to treat children equally.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: I do.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: I support my colleagues in requesting the Minister for Education and Skills to come to the House. We were looking for him last week to comment on the closure of small schools. This week we are asking why schools that deserve to be on the programme are not included on it?
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: Get a good start.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2012)
Brian Ó Domhnaill: I wish to be associated with the comments expressed to commemorate international women's day. I congratulate Senator Mary White on her recent achievement. I understand that the major press announcement of the day, the Fine Gael self-congratulatory programme which was scheduled for lunch time, has been cancelled at the request of the Labour Party because that party did not seem to agree.
