- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Mar 2008)
Alan Kelly: I agree with Senator Fitzgerald regarding the House discussing topical matters, on which there is a consensus. When the Seanad returns, working collectively to ensure topical discussions would be a plus for the Chamber. As I did not have a chance yesterday to speak on an important issue, I will discuss it today, namely, the plight of the undocumented Irish in the US. I accept that all...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Mar 2008)
Alan Kelly: Yesterday evening, I spent nearly two hours speaking with members of the ILIR and others. I spent some time in Boston with a number of my friends who are in the US illegally. Their plight is scary. They are disgusted and bewildered by the Taoiseach's latest comments and do not understand why he would make them. Since the failure of the US Congress to pass immigration reform legislation...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Mar 2008)
Alan Kelly: I agree and I thank the Cathaoirleach for his comments. We should have a proper and timely debate on this issue. A good move would be for us to meet members of the ILIR when they visit the Seanad to get their opinions. The Taoiseach should apologise for his comments and reiterate his and the Government's support for a bilateral approach to the issue. In one month's time during his address...

- Seanad: Health Services (13 Mar 2008)
Alan Kelly: I wish to raise the matter of the need for the Minister for Health and Children to outline if the Government is fully committed to providing funding for the operation of the CT scanner that has been lying idle in Nenagh General Hospital for almost a year and to provide an indicative date for the commencement of its use. This is one of the biggest farces of the HSE, and all involved in...
- Seanad: Health Services (13 Mar 2008)
Alan Kelly: With medical inflation included, the budget is effectively reduced by 12.5%. This means Nenagh hospital was under funded for this year, but it has always spent over the allocated funding. The manager has been told he must fund the CT scanner and the people to operate it from current funds. That is impossible for him. He already has approximately 35 people employed who, according to the...
- Seanad: Health Services (13 Mar 2008)
Alan Kelly: I have a great deal of respect for what I hope the Minister of State is trying to do in the area of innovation. However, both he and I know that what he had to read out was a load of waffle. He did not even have the spirit to read it in a good tone. I have a very simple question. Could the Minister of State pass on to the Minister for Health and Children a request that this be dealt with...

- Seanad: Finance Bill 2008 (Certified Money Bill): Committee Stage. (13 Mar 2008)
Alan Kelly: I accept the Minister's points and I reiterate the need to review this anomaly. I acknowledge his point on the possibility of facilitating a tax loophole. However, the current arrangement is unfair and must be addressed. Now that there is an awareness of the implications, perhaps it will be addressed in the next budget.
- Seanad: Request to Move Adjournment of the Seanad under Standing Order 30 (13 Mar 2008)
Alan Kelly: I ask that the House be adjourned to discuss a specific and important matter of public interest which has arisen suddenly, namely, the subject matter of No. 19, motion 35, on the Order Paper.
