- Seanad: Innovation and Job Creation: Statements (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: Cuirim fáilte roimh an tAire Stáit. Senator Carty was going well until the end of his contribution. However, what he said earlier was correct. The banks must play a significant role in job creation and in assisting innovation and enterprise. On today's Order of Business, Senator O'Toole stated that the cost of regulating the banks last year was â¬39 million and that the figure will...
- Seanad: Innovation and Job Creation: Statements (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: Our competitiveness is being eroded. Ireland has been referred to as the builder and creator of jobs in the construction industry but what about Ireland the employer? It is stated day after day that the cost of doing business in this country is not being addressed. A Martian who landed in Ireland in 2005 and returned in 2010 would find it difficult to conceive the programme for Government...

Jerry Buttimer: I thought I was second.
- Seanad: School Staffing Levels (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: The Minister of State is very welcome to the House. I wish to raise the situation of Scoil Barra Naofa CailÃnÃ, Beaumont in Cork and paint a picture for the Minister of State regarding staffing and pupil numbers. I hope the Minister of State will have good news because this is a progressive and modern school which has tried to get the right balance between class sizes and teachers. It...
- Seanad: School Staffing Levels (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: I thank the Minister of State for his reply, the last paragraph of which was disappointing. It illustrates that the Department does not show flexibility or willingness to allow students to flourish and to let their light shine. I know this area is not the Minister of State's remit but I am disappointed with the reply.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: I do not agree to that.
- Seanad: Údarás na Gaeltachta (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. NÃl aon ghá leis an mBille seo, ná le toghcháin Ãdarás na Gaeltachta a chur ar athló agus cearta daonlathacha na ndaoine a mhoilliú ag an am céanna. D'éist mé l'óráid an Aire. Chuala mé gach focal a dúirt sé, agus nár dúirt sé. Is gá go mbeadh toghcháin ann, ionas go gcuirfear le struchtúr an bhoird agus go ndéanfaà ceannaireacht a...
- Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: I join other speakers in extending my sympathy to Mrs. Callanan and the family. I had the pleasure of knowing the late Peter Callanan before I became a Member of this House. He was a very genuine, sincere and caring man who was full of humour and very fair. He had the great ability to put things very succinctly. There was many a day when I was giving the Government side a hard time and he...

Jerry Buttimer: On what grounds?
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: That is unacceptable. We agreed to the Order of Business and this constitutes a change.
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: We should not suspend the sitting for a vote in the Dáil. That is not normal procedure.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: I join other Members in requesting a debate on banking. The people are weary of those within the banking fraternity, particularly those at the highest levels who make the decisions. What the people want is accountability. They want the banks to pay the cost relating to what has happened and to assist ordinary citizens and business interests to get their affairs back in order. We have to...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: It is unacceptable. There is no accountability in this country any more. I request a debate on the role and functions of the State Examinations Commission and in regard to who is responsible for these errors. The last thing we need is a lack of confidence in the integrity of the examination system. Yesterday was yet another poor day for our examinations system. I do not know who is...

Jerry Buttimer: The Government is rolling over all the time.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: It is rolling over the whole time.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: Would the Leader confirm Senator Boyle's time line for the civil union Bill? I remind Members that we live in a democracy and I am quite safe in my view that I will be voting for the civil union Bill. The bishops, as the heads of the church, are entitled to their viewpoint, as are all citizens. We must have this debate in a rational, calm manner. I understand Senator Norris's frustration...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Jun 2010)
Jerry Buttimer: Senator Coffey made the most important contribution this morning in this House. When will we have a debate on the Government's job creation policy? One part of their economic task is to fix the banks, but the most important task facing Government is the creation of jobs. There are hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens who are unemployed and idle and have no hope, and they see no...
