Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: They are inextricably linked. The Religious Sisters of Charity are talking about transferring the land to the St. Vincent's Healthcare Group. There needs to be a building of trust here, on their part as well. It is not too much to expect that the women of Ireland would get this information. It is only right and proper, to be quite honest. Since the Tánaiste raised his concerns in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Okay. Will he brief us on how those conversations went?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: The Minister is not in a position to say the State would have a majority on the board today. What kind of timeline are we looking at? As Deputy Shortall has pointed out, the same answers have been made available for the past two and a half years. Are we talking about concluding this arrangement in a matter of weeks, months or will it be years?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Okay. The Minister has also said this morning that he and his Department are not actively looking at alternatives. I suspect one of the alternatives is Tallaght hospital. We accept he is not actively looking at this but does he have officials in his Department putting contingency plans in place in case this does not work out? Are the Minister and his Department working on a plan B?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Okay. Has the Minister a timeline in mind? He has said he hopes to be in a position to bring a memo to Cabinet in a few weeks. Is there a period after which he will just have to say we have done our best but it is not working out and we will have to move to a plan B?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: I will put it to the Minister another way then. Two and a half years ago everyone would have been of the view this needed to be dealt with in a matter of months, not years. We are now two and a half years down that line. I respectfully suggest if this is not concluded by the end of this year, the Minister will have to look at a plan B and it will have to be actively considered.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Okay. If I may have a quick word on vaccinations, is the Minister satisfied the supply line of vaccines coming into the country now is acceptable? Are there going to be any difficulties? Does the Minister foresee any challenges over the next few weeks? Clearly, the more people who are vaccinated, the fewer difficulties there will be with indoor dining.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Are there any further developments in terms of buying unused vaccines from other countries? I know some have already been bought. Will the Minister confirm whether he is in a position to purchase more or if deals are almost concluded?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: New National Maternity Hospital: Discussion (14 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister.

Joint Committee On Health: Impact of Covid-19 on Mental Health of Travellers: Pavee Point (13 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: I thank our guests for coming in today. I apologise for the time change but other matters were going on. Unfortunately, though, that time change has torpedoed all our schedules. I have great admiration for the work Pavee Point does. It can sometimes feel like two steps forward are being made, only to end up then taking five steps backward. I state that because housing obviously is a...

Joint Committee On Health: Impact of Covid-19 on Mental Health of Travellers: Pavee Point (13 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: How do the witnesses find the local Traveller accommodation consultative committees, LTACCs, in each of the local authorities? Do they find them to be effective? Do they need to be overhauled or reviewed? Is there anything that we can be doing better to support the local Traveller accommodation consultative committees? I would consider these committees a useful forum. There are some...

Joint Committee On Health: Impact of Covid-19 on Mental Health of Travellers: Pavee Point (13 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Senator Flynn absolutely would. I thank Ms Fay. I appreciate the comprehensive answers.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Hear hear.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Like everybody in the House, I, too, wish to pass on my sincere congratulations to our former colleague, Deputy Bacik, with whom I have worked for more than ten years as a Member of this House, a member of the justice committee and as spokesperson on justice up until last year. She will be a huge asset to the Lower House but absolutely will be a loss to this House. Her contribution to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: National Children's Hospital: Discussion (7 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: On a point of order, I wish to point out that the answers to the questions put by Deputy Cullinane have been nothing short of disgraceful.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: National Children's Hospital: Discussion (7 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: It is pointless to come in. There are no answers to questions at all this morning. It is just disgraceful.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: National Children's Hospital: Discussion (7 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: I acknowledge Mr. Gunning for providing the information to Deputy Cullinane's earlier question during the meeting. It was a failure of his senior management team in not providing him with that information before he came in front of the committee on this issue. I acknowledge the fact that the information was provided. I will ask Mr. Gunning about his senior management team. Does he have...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: National Children's Hospital: Discussion (7 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: There would usually be an individual who co-ordinates in that regard.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: National Children's Hospital: Discussion (7 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: That is fine. There is a risk management programme within the senior management team and the various components of this project.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: National Children's Hospital: Discussion (7 Jul 2021)

Martin Conway: Part of the assessment and analysis of the risk involved would have been to park dealing with claims until such time as the hospital is built. Did that recommendation come from those in the risk management section? Were they happy with it or did they have an issue with it? What was their approach?
