Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: I join Senator Mary Moran in calling on the Leader to request the facilitation of a debate on the scourge of suicide in Ireland and especially among young people. It now appears that financial pressures are seriously impacting on the health of many people here. The auctions at the weekend of repossessed properties are having a serious affect. I call on the banks to show more compassion and...

Seanad: European Financial Stability Facility and Euro Area Loan Facility (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (22 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: One point.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: I congratulate the National Ploughing Association on the huge success of the event in Athy in the past few days and for doing such a wonderful job in showcasing the best of Irish agriculture and business. The next major event on the agricultural calendar happens in the east Galway town of Ballinasloe next weekend when a week-long fair and festival commences. We look forward to welcoming as...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: It was not proven beyond reasonable doubt that this man carried out the atrocity for which he was executed. Seven out of nine witnesses withdrew their evidence, a murder weapon was never found and there was no physical evidence such as blood or DNA. The House should support an all-party motion to bring pressure to bear on countries that still impose the death penalty. Will the Leader ask...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: He could be going to the country.

Seanad: General Medical Services Scheme (21 Sep 2011)

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: As the person who suggested yesterday that we have a question and answer session with the Minister, Deputy Reilly, I have every confidence that the Leader will organise it at the earliest opportunity.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: It is cheap opportunism to expect him to attend at the drop of a hat.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: It will be scheduled in due course.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: I share the concerns expressed this morning about the rumoured job losses at Aviva. It is very disappointing news. We in this House need do everything possible to promote job creation and, as the Government has stated, to create an environment for the creation of employment. This morning, we all received correspondence about the possibility of 500 jobs being temporarily lost in betting...

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: Yes, I have indeed.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: I would be much happier seeing somebody having to go to the bother of going to a betting shop to place a bet rather than being addicted through the Internet.

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: Will the Leader speak to the relevant Minister to see whether we can initiate legislation to help save the 500 jobs that will be lost at the end of September? It is a significant number and I do not see why the law cannot be changed.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: I join previous speakers in congratulating everybody involved in our successful sporting weekend, including the wonderful achievement of our Rugby World Cup heroes on Saturday morning. I share the concerns expressed by colleagues regarding the reported Health Service Executive write-off. I am aware that many consultants are disputing the fact that they are the cause of the hospitals' ability...

Seanad: Future of Local and Rural Transport: Statements (15 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: I welcome the Minister of State and wish him well in his new role. He is off to a good start. It is encouraging to note that rural transport is given particular significance in the programme for Government. I served on the board of Galway Rural Development which operates a number of rural transport schemes throughout south-east and north Galway. Those schemes are particularly useful and...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: If there is pollution, it has to be cleared up.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: I strongly support the proposal by my colleague Senator Healy Eames about the ESB. It is certainly worthy of consideration and I hope the Government will consider it. It was regrettable that the first words from a union leader at the ESB this morning consisted of a call for strike action.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: That is something to be regretted and it is no way to proceed in this day and age. I ask the Leader to convey our appreciation to the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Deputy Hogan, for clarifying the situation with regard to septic tanks yesterday.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: We have had a summer of scaremongering around rural Ireland by people who should have known better, including Ms Marian Harkin MEP and the former Minister Deputy Ó Cuív, whose revised programme for Government in 2009 stated that the Government would introduce a scheme for the licensing and inspection of septic tanks and waste water treatment systems.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Sep 2011)

Michael Mullins: Yesterday's clarification by the Minister will bring great relief to many.
