- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Apr 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I also want to be associated with the expressions of sympathy for the victims and those hurt during the Boston marathon. It was an horrendous attack on innocent life. I know when one is coming close to the finishing line, there is very little gas in the tank. To take people out at that point is as low as one can go. I hope those responsible are brought to justice. The abortion Bill is on...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: National Reform Programme for Ireland 2013: Discussion with Department of the Taoiseach (16 Apr 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I thank the members of the panel for their presentation. I have long been impressed with the five targets set out in EU 2020 and I was wondering when we might get a progress report on them. It is nice to have this in front of us. I have a number of short questions. We seem to be doing well in achieving the targets set out in the action plan for jobs. However, the unemployment figure...

- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I have closely examined the legislation and there is a real danger that the Government may have inadvertently given the banks too much authority. Ironically, the remarks made by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport may have done us all a favour. He shone a light on the over dictatorial and over authoritarian approach to families adopted by the banks. Women and families are well...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: We do not need the banks telling us what to prioritise. We all know that the family home is sacrosanct. However, it is unwise for banks to now have the authority to set limits on the amount of money that we should spend on food and on health cover. Of course banks can give us guidelines and recommendations but we must watch where power lies. Let us not forget that a short time ago it was...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: My question was given. The Minister for Justice and Equality, and perhaps the Minister for Finance, must examine the ramifications of the targets that were given to banks. If the targets hit homeowners in a way that we cannot manage then the whole of society is at risk. They could result in a collapse.

Fidelma Healy Eames: Good point.
- Seanad: Philantrophy and Fund-raising: Motion (27 Mar 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I welcome the Minister and thank him for coming to the House. I commend the Independent Senators on tabling this motion as it shows they are well aware of the difficulty associated with working in the not-for-profit sector. Those involved in the sector are enriching communities in the arts and social enterprise area. I propose to focus on the concept of giving back through philanthropy. My...

He has been a great servant of this House and I look forward to joining others next week in sending him on his way. We will certainly miss him. I support Senator Mullins on what he has said here about potential welfare fraud. What he has outlined is very serious and I strongly encourage anyone associated with or...

Fidelma Healy Eames: The college works with postgraduates in the main, which is good because, as the witnesses have said, they have had the university experience. Do the witnesses believe there would be benefits in working with undergraduates? Does the college have an interest in the area of second level education at all? As Senator D'Arcy mentioned, there are particular areas where our performance is very...
