- Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report Stage (Resumed) (28 Nov 2018)
Bernard Durkan: I, too, was a member of the committee and like most other members, I attended all the hearings and listened to the submissions made by the various witnesses. The origin of this item in the Bill is that the committee sought advice on what applied in other jurisdictions. It transpired there was some national criticism that an attempt was being made to bring in legislation here which was equal...
- Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Report Stage (Resumed) (28 Nov 2018)
Bernard Durkan: I hate to disagree with my colleague from the southern hemisphere but I can assure him that it does apply. Otherwise, there was no necessity to go along with it. I have a total recollection of the discussion that took place. Equally, various people have spoken - I am sure in good faith - about what the public asked them. The public asked me if this would be the case and that reassured...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: 2018 State of the Union Address and Related Matters: European Commission Representation in Ireland (28 Nov 2018)
Bernard Durkan: I thank our representative for coming before the committee at this very important time. It is no harm to mark the success of the European Union and its successfully-concluded negotiations with the UK in respect of Brexit. None of us would be supportive of Brexit but it was not in our control. Michel Barnier, Guy Verhofstadt and Frans Timmermans displayed great vigour and dedication to the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Lyme Disease: Discussion (28 Nov 2018)
Bernard Durkan: Who are the internationally known and recognised experts in this area, apart from the WHO which has been mentioned? Some of the universities must have led in this research. For instance, one that comes to mind is the human form of brucellosis which has similar...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Lyme Disease: Discussion (28 Nov 2018)
Bernard Durkan: On a regular basis we meet people who are interested in rare diseases. They do not differentiate between one rare disease and another. The treatment may be different or the same, but I cannot understand why we do not have more information available to us that would lead us to the areas where the experts are who have the information readily available.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Lyme Disease: Discussion (28 Nov 2018)
Bernard Durkan: Dr. Sheehan mentioned treatment in conjunction with supplements. What are the supplements and what effect do they have on the treatment of a patient? For instance, I read somewhere recently that the majority of supplements are a waste of time and are used to convince patients that they can feel better or whatever the case may be. What is the doctors' response to that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Lyme Disease: Discussion (28 Nov 2018)
Bernard Durkan: Why do patients go abroad to get a service that they believe will cure their particular condition and for which, they believe, there is evidence proving effectiveness? Why would they do that and spend more money than is necessary? What is the average cost of treating a patient here and abroad? A figure of €10,000 was mentioned in the earlier session. I would regard that as an...

Bernard Durkan: Would it be true to say that every child and every adult has been bitten by a tick at some stage in their life?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Lyme Disease: Discussion (28 Nov 2018)
Bernard Durkan: As someone who was born and raised in the countryside, I assure the witnesses that I was bitten several times in my teens. This could be the reason for my present condition, but the jury is still out on that. Ongoing research is presumably carried out to identify the incidence of Lyme disease, which is as it should be. Furthermore, and this is definitely my last question, I presume the...
