Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: I welcome the witnesses. I will begin by calling a spade a spade. People who are unfamiliar with the sport ask questions about why it should be in receipt of such a degree of money. A good opening question from my point of view is to ask what benefit this has for the economy. I know Greyhound Racing Ireland undertook extensive economic research in the Power report. What does this do for...

Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: On a more grassroots basis, how many individuals are involved with greyhound racing as a sport? How many people are employed in it? How many breeders are there? Do the witnesses have those figures available? It is very important for Greyhound Racing Ireland to give the public at large some idea of why that investment from the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund is worthy of going to it and...

Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: With regard to income, in 2020 and 2021 there were extremely difficult circumstances for people involved in horse and greyhound racing. Incomes collapsed as a consequence of people not being able to attend race meetings and from the drop in income from the tote. How much is made from media licensing? SIS has the contract there. How much income comes from that on an annual basis?

Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: Is that one company or is there a collective? Does more than one company have rights?

Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: Yes.

Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: Okay. From the perspective of the future of greyhound racing, the number of dogs produced is a concern for animal rights activists. I am sure the witnesses are going to hear a lot more about that today. What work could be done, within reason and not damaging the sport, to try to improve the transparency around breeding and reduce the number of dogs in breeding? If that were done, would...

Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: During 2020 and 2021, the drop in spectators attending meetings was hugely significant to the income of Greyhound Racing Ireland. Looking at this year so far, how are attendances going? Are they recovering to 2019 levels in any shape or form?

Public Accounts Committee: Greyhound Racing Ireland: Financial Statements 2021 (10 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: I will return to the issue of the studbook. I asked this question and I would expect to get a proper answer. The level of dogs being bred per year is a huge concern. That would be the view of the general public overall. If you were to take a straw poll of a random sample of the population, I am sure that is what would come back as the biggest problem. Could Greyhound Racing Ireland do...

Water Policy: Statements (9 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: I welcome the Ceann Comhairle back. It is great to see him and I wish him well. I will make a few points concerning my interpretation of the situation with our water supply. My report in this regard is not very good. Moving away from the parochial and putting a more national focus on the subject for one moment, this situation stems from continuously devolving responsibility away from...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Renewable Energy Generation (8 Nov 2022)

James O'Connor: In the 30 seconds available to me, I will communicate my point as efficiently as I can as somebody from a farming background. At the moment, there is absolutely nothing for commercial farmers in Ireland when it comes to getting sufficient levels of financial support to install renewable energy infrastructure on their farms. A clear indication of this is that, as of last year, only 2% of...
