Caít Keane: The Chair did not take the interruptions into account.
- Seanad: Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union: Statements (14 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: I was correcting what Senator Tom Sheahan said. It would send out the wrong message to say we want a second bailout or we need it. Of course, we need the assurance that it is available if we need it, but we need the stability to say we are growing on our own two feet, that the Government is taking us in the right direction and growing the economy, and that we will grow out of the difficulties.

Caít Keane: Yes, without interruption.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: I agree with Senator Mullins that the issue of Syria should be debated in the House. It is being neglected and we must consider what we can do, if anything, to help the people there. The laying of mines on the route between Syria and Turkey that is being used by the fleeing refugees is deplorable. We should condemn it. The issue I wish to raise is public procurement. Members have spoken...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: A number of Senators have spoken about getting women to run for election and I commend them on their work in that respect. To quote a speech: It has been my experience that the style of leadership usually pursued by women makes them particularly effective in getting the job done. There is accumulating evidence that women bring a set of communication and interpersonal skills to the workplace...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: I ask the Leader for a debate on United Nations Security Resolution 1325. The Government launched its national action plan on this two months ago. This ground-breaking resolution calls on all nation states to implement policies at home and abroad that reflect women's experience of conflict and enable them to access formal peace-building processes. I acknowledge the work of Hanna's House...
- Seanad: Rare Diseases: Motion (7 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: I second the motion. On 29 February, Europe Rare Disease Day, I raised the issue of rare diseases on the Order of Business. I welcome the representatives from all the organisations who are present. The Genetic and Rare Disorder Organisation, GRDO have asked for clear defined health pathways for those affected by a rare disease. People with a rare disease are at a complete disadvantage to...
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: Ag leanúint leis an Ghaeilge sa Teach inniu, tá Foras na Gaeilge ag iarraidh deireadh a chur leis an 19 eagras a fhaigheann airgead ón Státchiste agus samhail iomaÃoch mhaoinithe a chur ina n-áit. Nà aontaÃm leis sin ar chor ar bith.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: Is mian le heagrais ar nós Comhaltas Uladh, Comhluadar, Conradh na Gaeilge, Glór na nGael, Seachtain na Gaeilge gnÃomhú mar ionstraim aontaithe darbh ainm Aontas Phobal na Gaeilge, a new branch of all of those organisations atá ag teacht le chéile le forbairt agus plean nÃos straitéise don Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn ar bhonn uile-Ãireann agus idirnáisiúnta. Céim radacach atá ann,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: Seachtain na Gaeilge nó coicÃs na Gaeilge atá ann anois agus tá a lán rudaà ar siúl. Maidin amárach tá neart rudaà ar siúl sa Teach seo agus tá súil agam go mbeidh gach éinne páirteach iontu. Maidir leis an rud a dúirt an Seanadóir O'Brien i dtaobh an t-easaontas atá eadrainn, nÃl aon easaontas idir an Tánaiste agus an Taoiseach. Ba cheart dúinn go léir gach taobh dár...
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: Provisions are being implemented at present on a piecemeal basis and the Minister has been complimented on doing so, but the procedure should be written into legislation so everybody will know whether he is coming or going. I ask the Leader to ask the Minister to come to the House to have a full discussion on this.
- Seanad: Anti-Litter Initiatives (1 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: I thank the Minister of State for coming into the House to discuss the issue of the plastic bag levy on biodegradable bags. There is a difference between biodegradable and degradable plastic bags. On 4 March 2002 the Government introduced a levy on plastic carrier bags. It was, primarily, an anti-litter initiative to positively change consumer habits. It was a most welcome development. I...
- Seanad: Anti-Litter Initiatives (1 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: I agree with much of what the Minister of State said, but it entirely missed the point of what I am trying to achieve. To clarify, I am totally in favour of the plastic bag levy. The Minister of State's main point was that it would be impossible to distinguish between a biodegradable and a non-degradable bag. That is like saying it is impossible to ascertain how much lead is in diesel....

Caít Keane: On a point of order, may I add three extra words which have been omitted from the matter I wish to raise on the Adjournment?
- Seanad: Business of Seanad (1 Mar 2012)
Caít Keane: I want to add them before the Minister replies on the Adjournment.
