Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: We will find out about the contractors. Two hundred is a lot of people and families to be impacted. We will make contact with them in some format, be it through the local enterprise office or Enterprise Ireland.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: Yes. I share the Deputies' deep sense of concern and disappointment regarding this morning's announcement. There is no denying that it has been a bad week for Cork, Clare and the wider Munster region. However, I assure the Deputies that the Government is treating this as a priority and will make every State support available to the impacted employees. The redundancies will take place on a...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: We understand fully how important the company is to the region and the role it has played in supporting jobs in the mid-west. There is no doubt that much work lies ahead. The company has been one of County Clare's biggest employers for many years, and the jobs cannot be replaced overnight. At the meeting this morning, however, it was very positive to learn there are many employers looking...

Heather Humphreys: Yes, we will keep everybody informed.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: I thank the Deputies for raising this matter. It is extremely disappointing to hear 320 jobs will be lost across two sites operated by Novartis in Ringaskiddy, particularly following the announcement yesterday that Molex is to close its facility in Shannon, resulting in 500 jobs losses there by the end of 2020. As I have said before, our immediate concern, whenever jobs are lost or are...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: I thank the Deputies for raising this important issue. The announcement yesterday by Molex that it was to close its facility in Shannon was deeply disappointing. I understand fully how important an employer the company has been and the role it has played in supporting jobs and enterprise in the mid-west since 1971. Of course, our immediate concern is for the workers and their families...

Approximately 80 of these hectares are leased to Teagasc who were the original owners of the site. The agreed rental consideration in the lease agreement with Teagasc is €18,005.80 per annum for the period 2014 to 2017 and €15,732.42 per annum for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Brexit Engagement: Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: I thank the committee for the invitation to address members in respect of Brexit. When it issued its invitation, the Brexit landscape looked quite different from how it looks today. The agreement reached last week between the European Union and the United Kingdom on a revised withdrawal agreement and political declaration on the future EU-UK relationship is a welcome development. The...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Brexit Engagement: Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: I was disappointed to hear about the job losses in both Shannon, which I visited earlier today, and Ringaskiddy. This is a big shock to both areas and, most importantly, a huge shock to the workers and their families. Our thoughts and concerns are with them. All the supports of the State will be made available to the workers to help them to upskill or reskill and to ensure they get job...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Brexit Engagement: Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: There is an early warning system but we were not aware of the job losses in either company in question. In the case of the first company in Shannon, I got a call late on Monday evening. I got another call late yesterday evening regarding the announcement in Cork. We were not aware of these before this. IDA Ireland works closely with both of these companies. Sometimes, however,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Brexit Engagement: Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: When this is all agreed, the UK will become a third country. Accordingly, we will continue to work with businesses because they will have to prepare for a changed trading environment in which there will be tariffs and checks. That will be subject to a free trade agreement between the EU and the UK. The transition period will kick in and that gives us time to negotiate a free trade agreement.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Brexit Engagement: Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: The initial transition period is to the end of 2020 and there will then be an opportunity for an extension of a further two years. The Deputy referred to customs arrangements. We have worked with businesses and developed a wide range of supports. Enterprise Ireland has developed a customs insights course. It is a 45-minute online course which is available to all businesses and the aim...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Brexit Engagement: Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: The Deputy is asking about the mix of funding. The mix of funding means that, in a no-deal scenario, the rescue and restructuring fund will be €42 million of bespoke loans or equity. The transition fund provides €45 million of bespoke grants, loans and equity, or all of them. The transformation fund is €8 million of bespoke grants. The emergency Brexit fund for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Brexit Engagement: Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation (23 Oct 2019)

Heather Humphreys: It will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. It depends what best suits a company's needs. We are here to help a company that gets a bad shock and if these funds help it over the difficult period and it turns the corner into profitability, because this is taxpayers' money, there is no reason why that money should not be paid back.
