Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Cabinet Committees (30 Nov 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I wish to raise the issue of the resignation of a GP in Blarney with the Taoiseach, which Deputy Gould brought up with him earlier. I raised this issue this morning with the Minister of State, Deputy Feighan, as a Topical Issue matter. My constituency colleagues and I have all been written to and told that an interim arrangement for cover has been provided for public patients. I know this...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: General Practitioner Services (30 Nov 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister of State. I appreciate him turning up to take this matter. A week ago, the people of Blarney and the surrounding area woke up to the news that their local GP is to resign at the end of this year. At a time when we know how difficult it is to get access to a GP, this has sent a shock through the community. This decision affects 1,600 patients, 600 of whom are public...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: General Practitioner Services (30 Nov 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I appreciate the response. I have much of that detail already from the HSE locally through community healthcare organisation, CHO, 4. The real reason I am here is that many elderly people are fairly distressed and fearful of losing their service. I am glad to hear the Minister of State assure the House that the HSE has taken interim steps. I am aware that a GP has been located locally to...

Vote 45 - Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (Supplementary)
(30 Nov 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Foley, and her officials here this evening. I would like to follow on from what Deputy Ó Cathasaigh finished with in relation to the summer programme. I commend the Minister on the changes that were made last year. I have said it here before that I was one of those who doubted that the money would be drawn down in its entirety but it came very close to...

Select Committee on Education and Skills: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 26 - Education (Supplementary)
Vote 45 - Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (Supplementary)
(30 Nov 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: It will. Okay, that is very good. My second question follows on from a point that was raised earlier about free books. The free book scheme is another scheme that is universally welcomed. The Minister might have referenced in the past that it is her ambition in the future, budgetary constraints permitting, to extend that scheme into second level. Could she comment on that?

Select Committee on Education and Skills: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 26 - Education (Supplementary)
Vote 45 - Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (Supplementary)
(30 Nov 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: That is good to hear again. We will try to reiterate it at every juncture we can. If I can be parochial on one issue while dealing with the capital programme, I would like to mention the special school site in Glanmire, County Cork. Can the Minister give an update on how that site is progressing? The constraints we have in Cork, in particular, in relation to special school places are well...

Select Committee on Education and Skills: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 26 - Education (Supplementary)
Vote 45 - Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (Supplementary)
(30 Nov 2022)

Pádraig O'Sullivan: I have raised the matter of home school community liaison officers in special schools via written parliamentary questions and occasionally via an oral parliamentary question. The response from the Department has been that special schools get an allocation of teachers which is far in excess of a mainstream school. However, the specific focus of a home school community liaison officer is to...
