Seanad: Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: We have spent more than two hours making fun and games of a very important Bill for people from minority groups, including transgender people. We are saying "transgender issues". Transgender people do not have issues. The issue is society and people who are anti-trans. It is very sad to see public representatives using this platform - the Houses of the Oireachtas - to spread lies and...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: Okay, I will withdraw it. Misinformation is being spread when we could have focused on education elements of the Bill. It is regrettable that the Government will not accept our amendment - due to a charge on the Exchequer - around education for people in fourth year in secondary schools on what a hate crime and hate speech are. When we know better, we do better and prevention is better...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: Just let me make my last point and I will finish then.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: What these people are making out in the Chamber this evening is that we are looking to brainwash. We have seen the protests against our libraries and stoking up hatred over the last few months. It is an absolute sin that public representatives can come in here for two hours, waste everyone's time and make a mockery of an important piece of legislation.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Human Rights of Travellers and Roma: Discussion (10 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: I welcome everyone to the 30th meeting of the Joint Committee on Key Issues Affecting the Traveller Community. We have received apologies from Senators O'Hara and O'Reilly. I remind members they must be physically present in the Houses to take part in a public meeting of the committee. I will not allow any member to take part in the meeting if they are not in Leinster House. I welcome...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Human Rights of Travellers and Roma: Discussion (10 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: This committee was set up in 2019 by Colette Kelleher, some of the members present, Oein DeBhairduin, along with organisations. Since then, we have examined numerous inequalities such as education, health, mental health, accommodation and employment. We made 83 recommendations in our report in 2021. To follow up on what Deputy Buckley rightly said, this committee is not about politics or...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Human Rights of Travellers and Roma: Discussion (10 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: There are six minutes left if any of the members wishes to add anything. I know we were on time, and then I took a load of time. It is only fair that members come back in.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Human Rights of Travellers and Roma: Discussion (10 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: It is the Traveller Culture and History in Education Bill 2018 and it will be on Committee Stage on 20 November. Again, it did not just happen. There is a need to push things through constantly as committee members. To end on this note, we have a Behaviour and Attitudes survey that was done and published in 2018. It is on the general population's attitude towards members of the Traveller...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Legislative Measures (9 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: I thank the Minister of State for taking the time to deal with this Commencement matter this morning. I was very disappointed to learn the Minister for Justice, Deputy McEntee, has decided to drop the incitement, or hate speech, sections of the Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022. We can all agree that our legislation is not fit for purpose and we...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Legislative Measures (9 Oct 2024)

Eileen Flynn: The Minister sat in that seat back when we discussed the Bill in 2023. Her words were, "You can still be offensive". Along with the amendments in the Bill as it stands now, without the Minister scrapping the incitement of hate speech, it was still okay to be offensive. People could still be racist or offensive but targeting and calling somebody names, running after them on the street or...

Eileen Flynn: The Senator has had an opportunity to speak.
