Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: Can Ms Collier find that information for me now?

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: We need that information before the end of the meeting.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: There needs to be accountability on this. It is hard to know where to start. For an agency in charge of 2,500 properties across the State, there is an unmerciful amount of, what we call, blindfolded trust on the OPW's side of the table. This has done inordinate damage to the reputation of our national Parliament and to the public's perception of what the State is spending hard-earned...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Active Travel (22 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: 184. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport for an update on an active travel project (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [42673/24]

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: I raise the issue of the rampant growth in the number of solar farms being developed in the east Cork area, ranging in size from 450 acres to 1,200 acres, one of which will potentially remove the largest single cow herd in the country. This is something that is hugely concerning to the people of east Cork, as we see, potentially, our green fields turning grey. I know Government guidelines...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Bus Services (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: I thank the Minister for that information. He is right in what he is saying. Passenger numbers are looking positive. Services have been rolled out in the towns that have been mentioned, in Youghal, Mitchelstown and Mallow. On behalf of the people of Ladysbridge, Ballymacoda, Lisgoold, Shanagarry, Garryvoe, of those important local villages in the east Cork area, I want to make the case...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Bus Services (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: I appreciate the Minister's engagement on this. It is probably our final exchange in the current Dáil term. I do not know if we will be back again for another round of these parliamentary questions. Throughout your term, Minister, I have enjoyed dealing with you. We have very different political views on many issues. I wish you a long and happy retirement from this House. You have...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Bus Services (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: 56. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will provide an update on the Local Link services in the Cork East constituency: if there are any plans for new routes in 2025; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [42103/24]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Bus Services (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: I want to ask the Minister for Transport about the updating of the Local Link services. In my constituency, where they have been rolled out, they have been successful. That is good but I want to make the point that we have villages, such as Lady's Bridge, Ballymacoda, Lisgoold, Shanagarry and Garryvoe, that need further services. In some cases, and many of the villages I have just...

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Charities Regulatory Authority (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: I welcome all the witnesses. The Peter McVerry Trust is in the headlines for the wrong reasons, which has prompted a lot of questions that need to be answered around what merits the Charities Regulator getting involved to undertake investigative work. Under Part IV of the Charities Act 2009, the Charities Regulator has the power to appoint investigators to investigate the affairs of any...

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Charities Regulatory Authority (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: In how many instances has that happened? As the Peter McVerry Trust grew between 2011 and 2022, I understand that it took over nine separate charities. The trust’s remit is supposed to be housing and homelessness, but the purpose of one of those charities was the advancement of religion, which is not one of the trust’s charitable purposes. The trust is in receipt of...

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Charities Regulatory Authority (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: An approximate figure is okay.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Charities Regulatory Authority (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: The reason I ask is there is a lot of grime on the window of the immigrant investor programme, IIP, which I am concerned about. Nobody is quite sure why it was shut down. A number of charities were involved in the process of obtaining it. There are multiple reasons - "issues occurred" and pressure from the European Commission and other aspects at an international level but looking at the...

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Charities Regulatory Authority (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: Will Ms Delaney elaborate on that? She said it was not something the Charities Regulator was specifically looking at.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Charities Regulatory Authority (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: I want to be careful; I am not from a legal profession but I want to ask the question because it is relevant. Is Ms Delaney aware of many charitable bodies accountable to the Charities Regulator from an inspection point of view that left that structure and went into a company limited by guarantee structure or out of the charity structure to obtain funds from the IIP?

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Charities Regulatory Authority (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: Ms Delaney is not aware of that.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Charities Regulatory Authority (17 Oct 2024)

James O'Connor: I encourage Ms Delaney to do some digging. It has been brought to my attention as a Member of the Oireachtas. I will not bring it up but it has crossed my desk.
