Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Travellers in Prison: Discussion (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: I have seen the work that the Traveller Mediation Service does. I have been there and seen it, and it is so impressive.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Travellers in Prison: Discussion (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: Other issues that have come up include discrimination and racist language, a robust complaints system, stigma and so on. The role of the Inspector of Prisons also arose. A bit of work is required but it could be done pretty soon. The director of prisons is next door at the moment at another meeting dealing with drugs. I attended that meeting before I came here. I think she would be...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Travellers in Prison: Discussion (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: From my interaction with them in the past, I am sure that is something to which they would be amenable.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Travellers in Prison: Discussion (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: As a committee, we could engage with them straightaway and make that point. From my dealings with them in the past, I am sure they would be proactive in that regard.

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Travellers in Prison: Discussion (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: It would be better if a complaints system was not needed at all and if we got in at an earlier stage. I am always fearful of a complaints process because there is confrontation and complaints. It would be good not to have the need for it but I recognise it is important. My focus would be to go before that and change the culture, as was said. It also strikes me that Travellers, in my...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: An Garda Síochána (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: Would the Minister of State agree with me that a lot of Garda time is spent on bureaucracy, behind computers, filling out forms, writing reports and so on when they should be on the beat? There is serious frustration there because of that. Have any studies been carried out in respect of this and can anything be done to alleviate the issue?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Visa Applications (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: 9. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the measures being taken by her Department to ensure the quicker processing of visa preclearance applications and associated appeals; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [38096/24]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Visa Applications (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: I ask the Minister about the measures being taken by her Department to ensure the quicker processing of visa preclearance applications and associated appeals. The office is doing great work in most areas, but there are one or two areas where I think there is a bit of slippage. Has the Minister looked at this and can further improvements be made?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Visa Applications (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister for her response. Can the Minister tell me now or perhaps later how many visa applications of various types are currently in the queue? The Minister may not have this information now but perhaps she might have it later. I am also aware that the Association of Leaders of Missionaries and Religious in Ireland has some concerns about how its procedure is working and...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Visa Applications (26 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister for committing to meet the Association of Leaders of Missionaries and Religious in Ireland because it is concerned about some of the issues it is encountering. I am sure they can be resolved with the very efficient officials speedily and efficiently. Are there different processing times in the different embassies across the world regarding visa applications and has...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the witnesses for the work they are doing and for being here. Apologies for being late. I had a Topical Issue in the Chamber and had to be there during the initial part of the witnesses’ presentation. I hope they understand and I apologise. Senator Sherlock mentioned the Open Doors Initiative. I am on the board of that initiative. It is an employers-led organisation....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: I apologise for interrupting but my time is limited and I would like to hear from the other witnesses. What Ms O'Brien is saying is really interesting and I would like to get more engagement from her on why people refuse employment or do not engage with the services. Has any research in that regard been done among that group of people? Is there something that can be done there? It is a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: It concerns me that so far this year more than 7,000 people have found themselves in that position. What I am hearing is there is a lack of co-ordination, lack of information, uncertainty, lack of confidence and all that kind of stuff, but the number is going up from last year and it is a concern if people are refusing jobs. They are accepting penalties as well. They are being penalised,...

David Stanton: It does.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: These are the figures I got from the Department yesterday, so they are very current. It is also very frustrating for employers that are screaming for workers and have offered someone a job to have that person refuse it for whatever reason.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Unemployment Blackspots: Discussion (25 Sep 2024)

David Stanton: I agree.
