Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I ask that TII review this. TII has no idea if the motorist has an electric car. Does TII not get that information? For example, I have a toll tag on my car. If I change my car, I must renew my tag. Is Mr. Masterson saying that I have to opt in?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...no inflation, we are now in a period of high inflation. That probably affects people who use the roads more than anybody else. My time is nearly up but I wish to make three points in respect of TII. I thank Mr. Wash, Mr. Maher and Mr. Masterson. We had a conversation about the roadworks at the Dunkettle interchange. I genuinely appreciate that it is probably the biggest road project...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: My point is about flexibility. I understand that in order to get to D, TII must go through B and C, but surely there must be recognition on the part of a PPP companies that we are not in peacetime and that there has to be flexibility on their part. They should not, for example, punish TII or the travelling public.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I will not put the witnesses on the spot or create a row in the context of the additional budgetary costs. I ask and propose, however, that we invite in the relevant section of TII as soon as possible to discuss the issues in this regard. In the report there is a section on speed cameras and consultation involving Garda checkpoints or speed checks. Is that within TII's remit?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland: Chairperson Designate (1 Dec 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: It is important that TII fulfils the programme for Government commitment and the aims of the national development plan in the development and completion of that project. That is the case for a number of reasons. The TII's record on road safety is very good. Mr. Llewellyn spoke about a parliamentary committee meeting in his opening remarks. People did not notice how they arrived safely...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...heartening and the Chair is right that time is of the essence. I raise one note of discord the timing was insensitive and it struck a very wrong note with many hard-pressed motorists. I ask that TII reflect on that. When speaking to hauliers, bus companies or private motorists, they say that it is a cost-of-living crisis. The decision really rankled with people. I just want to put that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I am not against speed vans. Ms Hughes might think I am a crank but I am not. I just think it defies the whole purpose of what TII and the RSA are trying to achieve. It is not right on that particular section of the road. That is my only observation on that. I would love to hear the rationale TII is employing with An Garda Síochána on the N40. I have campaigned for speed...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland Projects and Related Issues: Discussion (6 Apr 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...ramifications which we should try to avoid. Regarding Cork Metropolitan Area Transport, CMAT, the NTA is the approving authority for metro and light rail projects. I ask Mr. Walsh to outline TII's interaction with the NTA on that. What is the status of that project's delivery? I invite Mr. Walsh to meet the people involved in the Lee to Sea greenway. Funding was recently allocated...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...the Government on its decision. In the good mood I am in today, I also welcome the decision by the Cabinet to defer until July the ridiculous proposal by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, TII, to increase toll charges. I ask that the Cabinet ensure that increase is not carried through in July. Hard-pressed motorists, hauliers and bus companies are under pressure. Tá siad faoi...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...toll tag I am a big believer in that. For me, as a motorist, it is a fantastic facility to be able to use. I do not mind paying and I am lucky that I can pay the amount per month, whatever way TII uses to take it out. It is a great system. We have had the conversation with Deputy O'Rourke and the Chairman. The whole process seems cumbersome. I accept that there are PPPs,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Revised National Development Plan: Discussion (3 Nov 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: Is TII looking at it being a five-year project or a ten-year project?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland: Chairperson Designate (1 Dec 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I wish Mr. Llewellyn well. I hope that he will come back before this committee again, with his colleagues from TII, to discuss different projects. I thank him for being here today and wish him every success.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Infrastructure Ireland Projects and Related Issues: Discussion (6 Apr 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: That was TII's fault.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome Mr. Brady and Ms Hughes to the meeting. The proposal to lower speed limits by 10 km/h, if I read TII's document right, would result in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 0.7%. Is that correct?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: From that, then, TII states that a reduction in the speed limits on national roads and motorways would have a limited impact on greenhouse gas emissions. Is that correct?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: As for the Macroom bypass, has TII reached a conclusion with the contractor in the form of an agreement to open the project early?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I ask that TII engage with the hauliers on this. On the radio earlier, Mr. Drennan was quite clear in his stance on the issue of the use of the concession that is available to them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I propose that TII do that. It is important. Have the reduced toll fares for electric vehicles commenced? If they have not, where are we in the context of that particular scheme of tagging?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Whose responsibility is it to let people know they can avail of it? Is TII responsible?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Motorway Toll Charges: Transport Infrastructure Ireland (29 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Obviously, people were off the roads because of Covid. The volume of traffic was reduced and, as a result, the income coming in was significantly reduced. Was any levy or penalty imposed on TII in the context of its PPP contracts with the toll companies?
