Order of Business (10 Oct 2012)

Jerry Buttimer: First, I express my disappointment that Deputy Micheál Martin did not have a copy of the Evening Echo when he was canvassing in Rathgar last week. I am glad he was canvassing there and not in Cork-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Child Care Facilities and Inspections: Discussion (11 Jun 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: We all echo those sentiments.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Prevention and Treatment of Lyme Disease: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Dec 2014)

Jerry Buttimer: In fairness now, I will hand back to Dr. Cryan. I echo the point that Senator Crown made that Dr. Cryan has given powerful testimony and I commend him on that.

Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2013
Vote 38 - Department of Health (Revised)
Vote 39 - Health Service Executive (Revised)
(10 Jul 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: I certainly think all of us would echo the sentiment that the staff in the HSE and the Department of Health do that. As we are under pressure for time, because the Minister and Deputies Ó Caoláin and Kelleher must be in the Dáil at 11.15 a.m., I ask speakers to be brief in their questions. Does the Minister wish to reply to Deputy Kelleher?

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Jun 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: At the outset, I wish to ask three specific questions which the Leader might address in his reply. First, I echo Senator Norris by asking whether the civil union Bill will be published this week and whether the Leader has a timeline for it. Second, in his response to the Order of Business, the Leader should tell Members which Government and which Minister established the HSE.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill 2016: Motions (11 Jul 2018)

Jerry Buttimer: Cork Airport is a brilliant airport. In fairness to the chief executive, Mr. Niall McCarthy, and his team the airport is growing. An article published last week in the Evening Echostated that Horgan's Quay was the third terminal for Dublin Airport. That was a bit unfair. What is happening is that people in the south are choosing, in my opinion, erroneously to travel to Dublin when those...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Quarterly Meeting with Department of Health and HSE: Discussion on Health Issues (25 Jul 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: I echo the Minister's remarks. It is important we acknowledge the great work done by the HSE staff at all levels. I thank them for their sincere and committed service to the patients and people they come into contact with every day. I thank members of the committee for their work since January. We have had a very long, tedious amount of work and I compliment them all for the way they have...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2018)

Jerry Buttimer: ...family for their wonderful contribution to public life in Cork and Ireland generally. As Senator O'Sullivan said it is "the paper". When it was the Cork Examiner, we all bought it. The Evening Echois the paper I buy every day because it is the paper for Cork city. Every Christmas, we have The Holly Boughto look forward to. It is an extraordinary day and, in fact, some of us are...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Oct 2016)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the 21 Senators who predominantly raised the measures in the budget. I will deal with them as best I can and I apologise if I miss some of the points made. I echo the words of Senator Ned O'Sullivan. If one were to listen to the merchants of doom and gloom, we would return to the situation of 2001 and 2011 as opposed to where we are today, where more than 2 million people are at...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2007)

Jerry Buttimer: I echo Senator Kelly's call for an urgent debate on aviation policy in light of the revelations earlier regarding Shannon Airport and Aer Lingus. While I do not wish to engage in a debate now, clarity is needed on aviation policy and the Minister for Transport's role in the Shannon Airport issue. An Alice in Wonderland quality surrounds him. I would also like the debt free status of Cork...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Reform of Public Works Contracts for the Construction of Transport Infrastructure: Discussion (27 Apr 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the witnesses for attending and for the presentation. This is an important meeting and I echo the remarks of Senator Horkan that we should have the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform before the committee as a matter of urgency as part of an ongoing discussion on the reform of public works contracts. Deputy O’Rourke spoke about difficulties that are beginning to...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2008)

Jerry Buttimer: ...the programme for Government before the summer recess in light of the events of recent days, especially yesterday. I have asked about this on numerous occasions but have not received an answer. I echo the remarks of Senator Fitzgerald in asking that there be openness and transparency on the other side of the House regarding education and health. Yesterday I spoke to a young health...

Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (24 Oct 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: ...country some service because it is about our people. It is not about the one or two or the Galway tent people. It is about all of the people, an gnáth duine, from the man who stands selling the The Echo in Cork to the man who performs the brain surgery, and all those in between. This is Ireland. We are an Irish nation that deserves a new beginning, a new dawn. This Government is...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Dec 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: ...a disgrace that we will not have an opportunity to discuss it tomorrow evening. I appeal to the Leader to amend the Order of Business tomorrow morning to allow time for a debate on the budget. I echo the call made by Senator McFadden that the Leader invite the Minister for Social and Family Affairs to appear before the House. We are talking about the misappropriation of €2 billion of...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Dec 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: ...decision and announcement earlier to extend the EWSS and to make changes to the Covid restrictions support scheme, CRSS. It is very important that we continue to support our hospitality sector. I echo the call by Senator Black and others that the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Deputy Martin, be asked to come to the House for a discussion on live...

Seanad: Disregard of Certain Criminal Records of Gay Men: Motion (17 May 2023)

Jerry Buttimer: ..., I will not pre-empt or get involved in the debate. However, it is important on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, IDAHOBITDay, that we have this debate. I will echo other Members of the Seanad who spoke earlier about the events leading up to this motion and to IDAHOBITDayby reminding us all that regardless of who we are, we are all born free and equal...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Apr 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I echo and support Senator Warfield's remarks on the need for a balanced debate on sex education, and I applaud him for his remarks in the House today. I join with Senator Carrigy and others on the remarks about Andrew Geary. I know Andrew Geary. He is a tremendous father, a tremendous public servant and a huge and profoundly important advocate for his son, Callum. I commend him for his...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jun 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: In echoing Senator Harris's call, it is appropriate that we commemorate Seán Lemass and acknowledge the movement he made in this country. The Government could do likewise and examine how he transformed this country. He would be ashamed and appalled at the policies pursued by former Taoiseach, Deputy Bertie Ahern and the Taoiseach, Deputy Cowen, and the legacy they have left to this...

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Jun 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Since the Minister is here, I just want to make the point I made in my Second Stage contribution and echo the comments of Senator Wall. In this House, we should applaud the members of An Garda Síochána who were on the front line during Covid and performed heroically on behalf of all of us. The Upper House of the Oireachtas should acknowledge that. The Minister will know full well...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Nov 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I echo the accolades expressed to our colleague and friend, Christy Kelly, who is retiring after 40 years' service. He is a gentleman and a pleasure to work with. I thank him most sincerely for his tenure in the Houses of the Oireachtas. I support Senator McGreehan and commend the Leader and Senator Gallagher on the horticultural Bill. It is farcical that we are importing peat. I rise...
