Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government: Local Authority Assets (19 Jan 2017)

Catherine Connolly: 32. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government the detail of the land that is owned by Galway city and county council and zoned residential; the location of those lands in the city and in the county; if that figure includes the lands transferred by the city or county under the land aggregation scheme; the figure for the lands transferred; the plans for those...

Public Accounts Committee: 2017 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Chapter 10 - Funding and Oversight of Approved Housing Bodies
Vote 34 - Housing, Planning and Local Government
2017 Financial Statements - Housing Agency
(25 Oct 2018)

Catherine Connolly: Let me help Mr. McCarthy. There are 14 acres of land at Ceannt Station which is in a central location, eight of which are included in a plan on behalf of Bus Éireann with a private developer. There are major land banks in the docks area, while there is other land that was bought at astronomical prices. Of all cities, there should not be a housing crisis in Galway, but there is. I...

Public Accounts Committee: 2015 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 34 - Environment, Community and Local Government
(2 Mar 2017)

Catherine Connolly: I ask Mr. McCarthy to bear with me. I am not trying to catch him out. I am trying to use plain and simple English to elucidate the nature of the housing emergency. For a long time, the land aggregation scheme under which 247 ha of land have been transferred remained the third secret of Fatima. Nobody seemed to know about the land aggregation scheme after the decision to transfer land was...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (28 Nov 2023)

Catherine Connolly: It has been reported in the Galway media that the Galway Harbour Company is about to complete a deal with the Land Development Agency. This is cause for serious concern to me because of what is proposed. There are six acres the subject of the transfer. I am not sure at what price that public land, held by the harbour company in trust for the people of Galway, is being transferred to the...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (28 Sep 2017)

Catherine Connolly: This is one piece of land among many pieces of land that were bought. I want to just comment on this matter. Well done to Deputy MacSharry for raising the matter and securing an answer. What is noteworthy when one reads it is that the councillors held off. The councillors had no role in this purchase of land. The purchase of land is down to officials but the approval of a loan is for...

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government: Land Transfers (25 May 2017)

Catherine Connolly: 64. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government the amount of residential zoned land in the ownership of Galway City Council and Galway County Council and/or transferred under the land aggregation scheme by either, or both, local authorities; the location of these lands; the quantity of this land which cannot be used pending the proposed new road under the N6...

Public Accounts Committee: 2017 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 34 - Housing, Planning and Local Government
(28 Feb 2019)

Catherine Connolly: The system is created for unsustainability. It is maintaining the crisis and lack of tenure. Galway has any amount of land zoned for residential development, public land and State land. There is no masterplan. There are the docks, Ceannt station, Dyke Road and 115 acres out at the airport. There is no masterplan to look at that in terms of public housing. We have one agency after...

Public Accounts Committee: 2015 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 34 - Environment, Community and Local Government
(2 Mar 2017)

Catherine Connolly: Okay. No house has been completed. No house has been built on the small amount of land in Galway city that was transferred under the land aggregation scheme. Does Mr. McCarthy know how much land is zoned residential in Galway city?

Public Accounts Committee: 2015 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 34 - Environment, Community and Local Government
(2 Mar 2017)

Catherine Connolly: Okay. Does Mr. McCarthy know how much land has been frozen as a result of the proposed N6 project? The frozen residential land to which I refer was bought at similar prices to those mentioned by Deputy MacSharry in the context of another portion of land.

Public Accounts Committee: 2017 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Chapter 10 - Funding and Oversight of Approved Housing Bodies
Vote 34 - Housing, Planning and Local Government
2017 Financial Statements - Housing Agency
(25 Oct 2018)

Catherine Connolly: Do the officials see the difficulty? The land was bought. The councillors did their job. They earmarked the land which was bought and zoned residential, but it was not built on. There was then the land aggregation scheme. The Housing Agency is holding one site, while the other was not transferred. They have not been developed.

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government: Local Authority Housing (23 Feb 2017)

Catherine Connolly: 28. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government the precise acreage, value and location of residential land owned by Galway City and County councils which has been transferred under the land aggregation scheme; the total cost of the transfer; the plans for this land; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9027/17]

Public Accounts Committee: 2017 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 30 - Agriculture, Food and the Marine
(20 Jun 2019)

Catherine Connolly: To go back to property, finally, I was asking about the proceeds of land sales. There was one particular matter on page 31, namely extra receipts payable to the Exchequer. It referred to proceeds of a land sale of €642,000, which was a sizeable sum that I overlooked. What was the valuation process? What was the land and what was the process of sale?

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Teoranta (22 Sep 2020)

Catherine Connolly: 866. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if the chemical pesticide glyphosate is used on lands owned and managed by Coillte; the quantity of glyphosate used on Coillte’s lands in 2018, 2019 and to date in 2020; the quantity of land in hectares on which glyphosate was used in 2018, 2019 and to date in 2020; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24737/20]

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Coillte Teoranta (22 Sep 2020)

Catherine Connolly: 867. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if the chemical pesticide cypermethrin is used on lands owned and managed by Coillte; the quantity of cypermethrin used on Coillte’s lands in 2018, 2019 and to date in 2020; the quantity of land in hectares on which cypermethrin was used in 2018, 2019 and to date in 2020; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24738/20]

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Military Aircraft (27 Sep 2022)

Catherine Connolly: 106. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport further to Parliamentary Question No. 239 of 17 May 2022, if the same aircraft (details supplied) has landed at Shannon Airport on any occasion in the intervening period since it landed there on 7 May 2022; if any further investigation has been carried out into the items that were being transported on this aircraft when it landed at...

Housing and Homelessness: Statements (22 Mar 2016)

Catherine Connolly: ...market. I would be delighted to work with whatever Government is chosen. We must build social housing and do so rapidly. We need an immediate audit of all local authorities in regard to what land is zoned residential, how quickly social housing can be built and how much money is required to do so. We also need clarity on the land aggregation scheme. Land was purchased at high...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (18 May 2021)

Catherine Connolly: ...bluster. I am allergic to it. I want an acknowledgement that the support of the previous Government and, going back further, Fianna Fáil-led governments, has led to the housing crisis. If the Taoiseach has had a moment on the road to Damascus, I welcome that. If he now says we need public housing on public land as an integral part of the solution to the housing emergency, I...

Public Accounts Committee: 2016 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Chapter 14 - Control of Ireland's Bilateral Assistance Programme
Vote 27 - International Co-operation
Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs and Trade
(21 Jun 2018)

Catherine Connolly: ...That is why I am asking in that context and Mr. de Búrca is telling me the recommendations have been implemented and the last two are in the process. I have a practical question on buildings, land and premises. It appears in both accounts. I ask about this all the time in terms of what is rented and what is purchased and owned. Looking at Votes 27 and 28, land and buildings on...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Housing Issues (18 Oct 2018)

Catherine Connolly: ...of HAP, it is not going to learn and it is not going to sort out the problem. We do not want hubs. Obviously emergency accommodation is necessary, but what we want is a long-term solution. What land does Galway city own? Can the Minister tell me that? What is the difficulty with building on that public land? There are 14 acres at Ceannt Station, eight of which have gone to a private...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: State Lands (1 Dec 2022)

Catherine Connolly: I find it a little reassuring that we will be focusing on brownfield sites. I worry, however, about recreational land. I hear what the Minister is saying, but I have seen previous moves to change this designation. Many times these have come about via motions from councillors. This is still being done in Galway, where land is still being rezoned. This is one aspect of the matter. I think...
