Order of Business (3 Apr 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: This House does not get an opportunity to debate a wide range of health issues because the Minister does not introduce legislation and does not answer questions. I am convinced that we need to have a broad-ranging debate on health in this House. I refer to matters like patient safety, for example.

School Staffing. (26 Apr 2005)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...available here, only 10% of students in teacher training colleges are now male. At second level, only 15% of new ASTI members are male, so I suggest the trend is also progressive at second level. Does the Minister agree that this needs to be addressed, especially if it is a progressive trend? If the imbalance were the other way around, we would feel the need to address it. We should...

State Examinations. (25 May 2006)

Jan O'Sullivan: Does the Minister accept that rote learning, which is what is primarily rewarded in the leaving certificate examination, does not serve the interests of most of the 86% of students who do not drop out of the school system before that examination? Does she agree the examination should examine other kinds of intelligences and skills, in the interests of all children and not just those who drop out?

Order of Business (25 Feb 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: There are reports in the media today that the industrial action by public servants will affect hospitals in the health service next week. What information does the Government have about that plan of action? Does the Government intend to engage with the unions about what is planned? Does the Government have any plans to protect patients in that context? Can the Tánaiste give the House...

School Discipline. (11 Oct 2005)

Jan O'Sullivan: Does the Minister intend to implement the final report when it becomes available at the end of this year? Does she envisage implications for resources with regard to its implementation? The problem of particularly disruptive students has been identified in the interim report. There is a need to provide facilities for pupils who genuinely are unable to settle in regular schools. I refer to a...

Hospital Services. (8 Dec 2009)

Jan O'Sullivan: Does the Minister think it is ironic, inadequate and possibly dangerous for private patients that private facilities are not regulated? Does the Minister know how many private facilities in Ireland provide cancer services of any type, particularly in the context of the cancer control programme and the need for critical mass, triple assessment and multi-disciplinary teams? How long will it...

Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Report Stage (Resumed) (11 Jun 2014)

Jan O'Sullivan: The fact that someone is on a waiting list and has been in receipt of rent supplement for a number of years does not solve his or her problem. He or she is still waiting and still does not have a State supplied house.

Committee on Education and Social Protection: Select Sub-Committee on Education and Skills: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 26 - Education and Skills (Supplementary)
(10 Dec 2014)

Jan O'Sullivan: No. It does not involve the €103 million. It does not involve the Supplementary Estimate.

Committee on Education and Social Protection: Select Sub-Committee on Education and Skills: Teaching Council (Amendment) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Jan O'Sullivan: It does, and should, give them the information that they are not on the register, and the implication should be drawn by the teacher that they will not be paid. However, the Teaching Council cannot tell somebody that they will not be paid because it does not pay them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Local Government (Establishment of Town Councils Commission) Bill 2017: Discussion (13 Dec 2017)

Jan O'Sullivan: Yes, but that does not necessarily mean that the new system is the right model either. Just because Limerick did not happen to have such councils before does not mean that the right thing to do now is to keep the municipal districts.

Select Committee on Education and Skills: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 26 - Education and Skills (Supplementary)
(12 Dec 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: Does the Department have to pay the full amount or does the Department of Health pay some of it?

Written Answers — Department of Environment, Community and Local Government: Planning Issues (18 Feb 2014)

Jan O'Sullivan: Planning legislation does not place restrictions on the height of trees nor does it make any particular provision for recognition of a right to light. It is a matter for the individual concerned to continue to engage with Fingal County Council in order to reach a resolution on this issue.

Public Health (Tobacco)(Amendment) Bill 2009: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Jul 2009)

Jan O'Sullivan: Does Deputy Reilly intend this to apply outside the jurisdiction because I have been in a bar in San Sebastian which had some of these signs? There are a lot of Irish pubs around the world that probably have reproduction signs but I presume Deputy Reilly does not envisage this applying to them.

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: State Examinations Fees (26 Jan 2016)

Jan O'Sullivan: My Department does not issue guidelines to schools on examination fees with regard to the mock exams, or whether they should be internally or externally corrected, nor does it request any data from schools in this regard. Mock exams are administered by schools, without any input from the Department or the State Examinations Commission.

Other Questions: Homelessness Strategy (13 Jul 2017)

Jan O'Sullivan: My question is in a couple of parts. First, when does the Minister expect the target, which has not yet been met, to take families out of hotels to be met? Second, how long does he expect families in hubs will be there? I also ask him about arrangements for children getting to school and other activities.

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Student Councils (22 Sep 2015)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...a post primary school may establish a student council and that the schools Boards of Management should encourage, facilitate, and give all reasonable assistance to such ends. While my Department does not engage with student councils at a local level it does provide significant support for their representative body the Irish Second Level Students Union (ISSU). The ISSU is the national...

Questions on Proposed Legislation (7 Jul 2016)

Jan O'Sullivan: My question relates to an issue in the Minister's own area. Yesterday he put out a statement on an admission to schools Bill but I have not been able to find it on any website. It does not appear to be available yet so can the Minister tell me if this is the case? I have checked on the Department's website and on merrionstreet.ie. The previous Government published the Education (Admissions...

Special Educational Needs. (9 Mar 2005)

Jan O'Sullivan: In her reply about children getting what they need, does it mean that the poor unfortunate principals will have to make a decision in September if they do not have sufficient resources? Where a child had two and a half hours' one-to-one support, will the principal now have to decide the child does not need it anymore or can they get the resources from the Department?

Order of Business (Resumed) (7 May 2009)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...Bill is due to come to the House from the Seanad. It relates to the question of Vietnam and Russia. If we can deal with it as speedily as possible, the long-term situation will be helped. When does the Tánaiste expect the Bill to be before this Chamber and does she expect it to be enacted before the summer recess?

Health Service Staff. (17 Oct 2007)

Jan O'Sullivan: The Minister set up the HSE nearly three years ago to centralise the system so that bureaucracy could be reduced and more funding could be released for direct patient care. What monitoring does the Minister carry out on the HSE? The growth in senior management numbers is extraordinary, in spite of her explanation today. What hands-on relationship does she have with the HSE to ensure that...
