Caring for Carers: Motion [Private Members] (31 Mar 2021)

Pearse Doherty: ...do dhaoine atá an cúram de dhíth orthu. Ní féidir luach a chur ar an obair atá idir lámha ag na cúramaithe seo. Níl dabht ar bith go gcaithfear tacú leo agus sin an rud atá os comhair na Dála inniu. Carers have been the unsung heroes of our society for many years. Successive Governments have undervalued, or not valued at...

Supporting People with Disabilities and Carers: Motion [Private Members] (5 Mar 2024)

Pearse Doherty: ...;anamh sa rún seo ach fosta don obair atá á dhéanamh aici ar son daoine faoi mhíchumas agus cúramóirí amuigh ansin. Bíonn an cheist seo á hardú aici arís agus arís eile. People with disabilities and carers deserve better and the time for action is now. In Donegal, and indeed throughout the State, people with disabilities...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (20 Jan 2022)

Pearse Doherty: ...steps that were agreed, I am focused on the €1,000 bonus payment. This morning the Taoiseach stated that a panel will be established. When he was questioned directly about categories such as carers, he said they are not ruled out. The Tánaiste has given an answer here today that the payment will only be made to those working in clinical settings. Is there a possibility that...

Written Answers — Social Welfare Code: Social Welfare Code (22 Nov 2011)

Pearse Doherty: Question 292: To ask the Minister for Social Protection if she has decided to cut the half-rate carer's allowance received by more than 21,000 family carers by 40% in budget 2012; if not, if she will make a public commitment not to cut this important support for carers in budget 2012; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [36076/11]

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (4 Mar 2021)

Pearse Doherty: ...response from the Tánaiste. I will make the point that the only person playing politics here is the Tánaiste. There is a very genuine argument and rationale for having some priority for family carers. There is no priority for them at all at the moment. They fall into the general population priority of age groups. I know many of these family carers. Some of them are very...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (4 Mar 2021)

Pearse Doherty: ...been a lengthy lead-in time. We all knew that it would be necessary to deliver the logistics for a vaccination programme. The uncertainty in this regard is causing great anxiety. All the while, another issue I raised with the Tánaiste remains unresolved. It is the urgent need to afford priority vaccination for family carers. Many carers are at their wit's end. I am sure they have...

Questions on Promised Legislation (23 Feb 2017)

Pearse Doherty: The programme for Government states, "We wish to see greater involvement of family carers in the preparation of care plans, aiding the provision of care, together with more accessible training and respite care, to facilitate full support." Those are fine words. Will the Tánaiste explain to the carers in Donegal why respite care has been cancelled throughout the county, with no one...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (18 Feb 2021)

Pearse Doherty: Yesterday, during Leaders' Questions, an Teachta McDonald raised with the Taoiseach the issue of family carers and the failure to set out a specific place for them in the Covid-19 vaccination programme given the vital front-line care they provide. We in this House know that family carers look after vulnerable loved ones with compassion and love. Their value is immeasurable. In response...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (20 Jan 2022)

Pearse Doherty: ...the past 24 hours. I would appreciate some clarity as to how who will be able to receive the payment will be determined and when they will receive it. For example, what about the cleaners in hospitals and other agency staff who are not directly employed by the HSE? Will they be entitled to this €1,000 bonus? The group of people who feel most let down by this omission so far...

Finance (No. 2) Bill 2013: Report Stage (Resumed) (4 Dec 2013)

Pearse Doherty: ...However, it was limited in its scope. There was insufficient engagement with civic society. When the Commission on Taxation recommended that the one-parent tax credit should be given to only one carer there was no consultation with the families or the organisations that represent them. Economists examined the figures and based the recommendation on those assessments. The SIPTU...

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Tax Credits (5 Nov 2013)

Pearse Doherty: 150. To ask the Minister for Finance if he has considered linking qualification to the single person child carer tax credit for a separated, non-principal carer who would have formerly qualified for the one parent family tax credit, to the payment of child maintenance. [45655/13]

Written Answers — Department of Social Protection: Carer's Allowance Appeals (28 Jan 2014)

Pearse Doherty: 360. To ask the Minister for Social Protection the reason a person (details supplied) in County Donegal was refused carer's allowance for their parent on medical grounds when their parent successfully qualified for carer's last year and their sibling had been in receipt of same; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3538/14]

Pearse Doherty: Question 296: To ask the Minister for Social Protection if she will provide a breakdown of the staff in the carer's allowance department in 2009, 2010, 2011 and to date in 2012; the breakdown of staffing resources in each unit of the carer's allowance section; the role of each staff member in processing applications; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [34776/12]

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Finance Bill 2019: Committee Stage (5 Nov 2019)

Pearse Doherty: I would appreciate that. Take the example of a cohabiting couple with a child who has severe disabilities, where the parent is a carer. Home carers are entitled to this credit and they should not, in my view, be disadvantaged because they are not in a civil partnership or formal marriage union. I seek a clarification. I would appreciate if a note could be provided before Report Stage.

Pearse Doherty: 105. To ask the Minister for Social Protection if he will consider making changes to eligibility rules governing the carer's allowance payment in respect of the requirement that recipients must not be engaged in education and-or training for periods longer than 15 hours per week; if consideration will be given to relaxing this requirement for persons that opt for care sharing, which enables...

Finance Bill 2014: Report and Final Stages (25 Nov 2014)

Pearse Doherty: I add my support to the amendment. I cannot imagine that the cost to the State would be substantial. Does the Minister have figures for the number of secondary carers who could avail of this provision if the amendment were enacted and the costs associated with it? What Deputy Donnelly said about the Minister's response last year makes sense. Obviously this is in a controlled space. There...
