Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (Amendment) Bill 2006: Second Stage (13 Dec 2006)

Éamon Ó Cuív: The Deputy is attacking my officials; I am defending them. I have no doubt they gave an indication that they would look favourably, subject to discussions with the Department of Finance, on various issues, including the provision of adequate finance etc. At all times they acted in concert with the Department of Finance.

Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (Amendment) Bill 2006: Second Stage (13 Dec 2006)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I cannot see how discussions could be held unless issues could be discussed subject to reporting back and getting those issues approved or otherwise. Therefore, I am sure, as is stated, that they gave indications but no undertakings were given. That is the issue that must be stressed — they indicated that these issues could be examined and decisions arrived at. The minute states that...

Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (Amendment) Bill 2006: Second Stage (13 Dec 2006)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I absolutely confirm that the translation service is for these Houses only. There is no question it being made available to people outside these Houses unless the commission makes this available to Ministers or anybody else, and I do not believe it will. Statutory instruments are not involved, it is purely statute law.

Éamon Ó Cuív: As I have already indicated on the record of the House, these regulations have been published and laid before each House of the Oireachtas in draft form. At this stage, it is expected that in excess of €22m will have been spent...
