Tim Lombard: Could I continue without interruption? I believe the Minister mentioned there were 700 to 800-----
- Seanad: Crime and Policing: Motion (27 Sep 2023)
Tim Lombard: Between 700 and 800 new recruits will go through the college in 2023 according to the Minister. That was a significant statement. I am open to correction on that but the Minister might confirm whether she stated in the House a few minutes ago that up to 800 new recruits would go through the college in 2023, not 500, the number we just heard from a Senator.
- Seanad: Crime and Policing: Motion (27 Sep 2023)
Tim Lombard: May I continue?
- Seanad: Crime and Policing: Motion (27 Sep 2023)
Tim Lombard: It is unfortunate that we have a scenario where I am being heckled. That is an increase and a good news story which has to be acknowledged. I acknowledge the work members of An Garda Síochána are doing on the ground. Sometimes we do not acknowledge them enough or the work their families do. Every time they put on their boots and go out the door, they do not know what will...
- Seanad: Crime and Policing: Motion (27 Sep 2023)
Tim Lombard: That is a significant debate that needs to take place. Garda recruitment numbers, which I believe the Minister said would be 800 this year, although I am open to correction on that, are significant compared with recruitment to the Naval Service. We should look at what can be done in the area of recruitment to ensure we reach our full potential and get all Naval Service ships out to sea....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of the Sheep Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Sep 2023)
Tim Lombard: I thank the Senator. The voting block in the Dáil has ended so other members will be returning shortly. I will take our guests back to their opening statements. Mr. Punch made an interesting opening statement regarding the Brexit adjustment fund, which Senator Paul Daly also mentioned. It is quite an amazing story to think that the sheep industry was the industry most affected by the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of the Sheep Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Sep 2023)
Tim Lombard: The comparison is with 2016.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of the Sheep Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Sep 2023)
Tim Lombard: It is the biggest game in town. We have funding in place that has already been approved. We have an argument that shows the sheep sector has been critically damaged by the Brexit deal compared to the other two major sectors, which are dairy and beef. If we are looking for the argument, that is the ultimate case. What is our next step? Should the committee call the Minister before it?...

The next public meeting committee will be held on 4 October 2023 at 5.30 p.m., when there will be an update on the forestry programme and strategy. Since there is no other business, the meeting stands adjourned.
- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by An Taoiseach (28 Sep 2023)
Tim Lombard: I welcome the Taoiseach to the Chamber. On the theme of agriculture, it is important that the nitrates derogation is front and centre in the coming weeks and months. There is an important debate about where we will go with our dairy sector in particular. As an industry, it is worth €17.2 billion to our State, with 59 different milk plants all over Ireland. It is a driver in our...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Forestry Programme and Strategy: Discussion (4 Oct 2023)
Tim Lombard: I thank the Minister of State. She referred to the report that was brought forward to the Cabinet and the three conditions that might need European approval. The last time we addressed state rules with the European Union, we were affected by the environmental impact rather than the issue we went to consider. Has the Minister of State started negotiations with the European Union? Has there...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Forestry Programme and Strategy: Discussion (4 Oct 2023)
Tim Lombard: Regarding the announcement she made today in respect of 1 ha or 2 ha, depending, can the Minister of State elaborate on the conditions pertaining? What type of forest is allowed? Is it strictly native wood or are we looking at opening it to any kind of forestry?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Forestry Programme and Strategy: Discussion (4 Oct 2023)
Tim Lombard: Mr. Moore reflected on the previous programme and the amount of peaty soil that was used in it. He might give me that percentage again. What was the percentage that was used in the programme from 2017 onwards?
