Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jun 2016)

Martin Conway: I wish to be associated with the expressions of sympathy to those who suffered tragedy in Orlando, which was quite shocking. I wish to see equality, awareness of disability and of difference and diversity become a mandatory component of primary education in this country. As legislators, we can introduce the most forward thinking, radical legislation one could possibly imagine to prevent...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jun 2016)

Martin Conway: The Cathaoirleach is always a gentleman and that is not going to change. I commend Senator O'Sullivan on his contribution regarding mobile phone coverage although I am coming at the issue from quite a different perspective. I intend to bring a SIM registration Bill to the floor of the House in the coming weeks which aims to ensure that all SIM cards sold by mobile phone operators are...

Martin Conway: Well said.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2016)

Martin Conway: I join in the call made by the Fianna Fáil group leader, Senator Catherine Ardagh, for a debate on crime. This city has been ravaged by the recent gangland assassinations. We all need to be on the alert to and highlight the issue. The Minister would be welcome to come to the House for a debate on it in the near future and I call on the Leader to facilitate my request. I also call for...

Martin Conway: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit go dtí an Teach. I apologise for not being present for the earlier part of the debate. Unfortunately, I had to honour a commitment. I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Corcoran Kennedy, to the House. I have known her for a long time and know of her passion and commitment to public service. She has hit the ground running in what is an...

Seanad: Health: Statements (21 Jun 2016)

Martin Conway: This is an important point. The medical profession and all stakeholders have responsibilities. There are many anecdotal examples of GPs referring people unnecessarily to accident and emergency units. The ten-year plan that the committee is being formed to establish and develop needs to engage with all stakeholders and, where possible, should have their unanimous agreement.

This morning, I had the great privilege of giving the opening keynote address in a very important seminar on equality, recruitment and employment organised by the Mid-West Disability Inclusion Forum. It is a new forum formed to help industry engage with people with disabilities in a move to promote greater access to the...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Jun 2016)

Martin Conway: I am disappointed to note that the trial in Egypt of the Irish citizen Mr. Ibrahim Halawa has today been postponed for the 14th time. That is a worrying development. Seanad Éireann should again send our concerns on this issue to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, who I know is doing everything he can to expedite a resolution of this situation. Like everybody else, I was quite...
