- Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (Resumed) (29 Oct 2008)
Maurice Cummins: I move amendment No. 4: In page 11, line 49, to delete paragraph (c). We addressed this issue under section 8. At the risk of repeating myself, this section deals with local authority members. Reducing from three to one the number of local authority members on the boards of port authorities, with the consequent loss of their local and business knowledge, is a retrograde step for all...

Maurice Cummins: Is that copperfastened?
- Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (Resumed) (29 Oct 2008)
Maurice Cummins: A political commitment is not worth much after listening to the budget, with all due respect.
- Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (Resumed) (29 Oct 2008)
Maurice Cummins: I have one point for clarification. The Minister of State indicated the Minister made a political commitment in this respect. Is it possible for this commitment to be included in the Bill on Report Stage? If the Minister has indicated it is his intention to appoint a local authority member, it should at least have some specific mention in the Bill rather than being a political commitment.
- Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (Resumed) (29 Oct 2008)
Maurice Cummins: We know what political commitments are. If it is the Minister's intention to have a councillor involved in this way, the provision should be in the Bill and the Minister should introduce it on Report Stage. I will not labour the point further but I hope to see this political commitment included in the Bill through a Government amendment on Report Stage. Otherwise, we will treat the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (30 Oct 2008)
Maurice Cummins: Considerable uncertainty and fear has been created by the announcement that tax relief for care in nursing homes will be changed from the marginal rate to the standard rate. Ministers have issued contradictory statements about this subject. The Government is also hiding behind the fair deal proposals, on which there is also confusion. These details should include eligibility criteria. The...

Maurice Cummins: He is leaving it to the Senator.

Maurice Cummins: If Deputy Boyle does not want to be in government, he should get out.
- Seanad: Morris Tribunal: Statements (30 Oct 2008)
Maurice Cummins: I join Members in thanking Mr. Justice Morris for his report on happenings in Donegal which brought shame on many members of the Garda SÃochána. These caused distress to the vast majority of members of the force who go about their business in a professional manner serving communities fairly, diligently and effectively and without fear or favour. This has been the hallmark of the Garda...

- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2008)
Maurice Cummins: We have not had any such debate so far.
- Seanad: Development of Green Technology: Motion (5 Nov 2008)
Maurice Cummins: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Kelleher, to the House. It is customary that amendments are tabled to a Private Members' motion but we saw no reason in tabling an amendment to this motion which we fully support. I welcome the debate and I look forward to the contributions of many Members. I also welcome the Minister of State, Deputy McGuinness, who has just arrived in the House. I...

Maurice Cummins: We are the ones who do not like to see them in Croke Park.
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Nov 2008)
Maurice Cummins: In the budget the Minister for Finance, Deputy Brian Lenihan, announced the closure of four barracks, two in Donegal, one in Longford and one in Monaghan. He suggested it would help the national finances. Far from helping the finances, extra costs will be accrued as a result of this announcement. There will be an extra cost of â¬2 million per annum for the change of station allowances,...
- Seanad: Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (Resumed) (6 Nov 2008)
Maurice Cummins: This amendment was tabled in order that we might deal with the lack of consultation that has been associated with the Bill from the outset. This is a cause of great concern not only to the people of Bantry and Fenit but also to local representatives and Oireachtas Members. Two Members of the Dáil, Deputy P. J. Sheehan and Deputy Jim O'Keeffe, are champing at the bit to deal with this...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2008)
Maurice Cummins: There is anger, fear and concern among the public at the brutal murder of Shane Geoghegan. War is taking place on our streets, a war the State is losing. We need stronger deterrents, for example, a minimum of 25 years for murder. Electronic surveillance evidence should also be allowed in court. The anomalies mentioned by Senator Quinn must also be addressed. These are only some of the...
