Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Investment Framework for Transport in Ireland: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I believe it needs to happen. I will conclude by saying to Deputy Matthews that I absolutely love the train and I would love to see more rail lines opening up. I have often said in this committee that we need to advance a lot of projects in the Clare area and in the west of Ireland. Reopening a train line is fine but building a new rail line takes many years of procurement and different...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Investment Framework for Transport in Ireland: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I thank the Minister. I suppose the green way of life is how he has lived all of his life but, ideologically, many people did not buy into the greening of Ireland until recently. Far more people will not make the modal shift until it makes sense for their pocket. I get what he is saying about the PSO but, unfortunately, people will not make the modal shift to rail if a journey costs...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Investment Framework for Transport in Ireland: Discussion (26 Jan 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I thank the Minister for being very engaging, as always. I hope that when we have another meeting such as this in the coming months, I will be able to tell him in real time that it is now cheaper to travel by train in Ireland than it is to go to Amsterdam or Scotland.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021, and Disability and Transport: Discussion (19 Jan 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I confirm that I am in Leinster House 2000. I wish the committee members and the witnesses a very happy and healthy 2022. I thank the witnesses for their opening statements and for their contributions so far. I have been following the meeting all the way through. I refer to something the Minister of State, Deputy Hildegarde Naughton, said in the Dáil Chamber when this matter was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021, and Disability and Transport: Discussion (19 Jan 2022)

Cathal Crowe: That is good to hear. We all saw that "Prime Time" special a few weeks ago on e-scooters. It was screened a few weeks before Christmas. A lot of these e-scooters have a restricter on them that inhibits the speed one can travel at. As the witnesses may recall, it was shown on "Prime Time" that a few clips of wire can be used to reset that restricter and enable those scooters to do much...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021, and Disability and Transport: Discussion (19 Jan 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I have concluded. I merely would ask that Ms Tinsley and Mr. Fulham comment on my questions. There were many questions in terms of the widths, etc. I find that some of these guidelines become more than guidelines. They become overly prescriptive to the point that in practical terms they do not work as well as they were intended to.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021, and Disability and Transport: Discussion (19 Jan 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I thank Ms Tinsley. If Mr. Fulham has any views on the same questions, I would appreciate them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021, and Disability and Transport: Discussion (19 Jan 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I thank Mr. Fulham. That has been very constructive. The guidelines I referred to, as have others, were devised at a time when the Ford Fiesta, which was a small hatchback, was the bestselling car in Ireland. We have very narrow parking spaces set down and prescribed by local authorities when planning permissions are granted and new developments are happening. It is happening all over the...

Cathal Crowe: 28. To ask the Taoiseach when the Cabinet committee on education will next meet. [4713/22]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (1 Feb 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I wish to mention something briefly along the lines of what the previous speaker has said.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (1 Feb 2022)

Cathal Crowe: It is. There is a similar school, Lissycasey National School, in my constituency. I was there on Monday morning with local Councillor P.J. Kelly. Accommodation has been green-lighted but the needs do not stop there. There is a need for a sensory garden and additional parking. I believe the matter is before the Department and I ask the Minister to try to expedite it.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (1 Feb 2022)

Cathal Crowe: It was linked to the question. It referred to the same issue in a different county.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (1 Feb 2022)

Cathal Crowe: That is fantastic. I thank the Minister.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Disadvantaged Status (1 Feb 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I thank the Minister. It is good that a review is under way and that we have an action plan ahead of us. It is important that schools now are in a position to submit data. I know of several schools in County Clare and throughout the country that have carried out a census and socioeconomic profiles such as Ennis Educate Together National School, St. Joseph's Community College, Kilkee, and...

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Agriculture Industry (1 Feb 2022)

Cathal Crowe: 836. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if, in view of the investigation his Department is carrying out, it would be prudent to suspend upcoming inspections scheduled by a society (details supplied) until such a time that the investigation is concluded; his views on the current status of the investigation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4505/22]

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (2 Feb 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I wish to raise the issue of overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick, UHL. Since the Government took up office significant inroads have been made, including the provision of new bed blocks. Many good things are happening, but there is still a very acute problem with trolley numbers. On 26 January, this number again broke national records with 111 people waiting for beds. The...
