Seanad: Agrifood Sector: Motion. (29 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Coughlan, and her officials to the House. Most people throughout the country would warmly welcome the Minister's farm waste management plan. Of all the plans we have had in past years, this is the first to have flexibility with regard to anyone who wants to spend money in developing and managing their farms, whether it be for environmental or purely economic...

Seanad: Agrifood Sector: Motion. (29 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: Yes. However, it was not long ago that food inspectors travelled the country closing down small enterprising food ventures on farms. If housewives, to supplement the family's income, were producing bread, cheese or other foods, they were told they could not do it because of EU rules, regulations and food directives.

Seanad: Agrifood Sector: Motion. (29 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: Now, the wheel is turning again with the arrival of farmers' markets where farmers can sell their produce in the open air. It is happening all over Europe and now we have decided we can do it here once more. Many people, some now gone from farming, attempted previously to be innovative but they were stymied in their efforts by over-enthusiastic regulators. One of my constituents runs a...

Seanad: Agrifood Sector: Motion. (29 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: The Minister can have it later.

Seanad: Agrifood Sector: Motion. (29 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: It should not be but that is the reality. The man would appreciate a conversation with the Minister about the matter. The Minister referred to forestry. The recently appointed Minister of State said in a statement that she was concerned there had been such a fall off in the development of forestry. Was there a change by the Department with regard to what happened last year with the cutbacks?...

Seanad: Agrifood Sector: Motion. (29 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: If the applications were manually accepted, the people who intend to go ahead with forestry should be given an opportunity to do so. There should be some relaxation of the procedure to allow them to proceed. This is a productive possibility that is again being stymied. I ask the Minister to deal with this.

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: More of the knee-high stuff.

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: Should we go on our knees?

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: Eight years is a long time.

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Mar 2006)

Ulick Burke: That is outrageous.

Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Apr 2006)

Ulick Burke: It is once-off.

Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Apr 2006)

Ulick Burke: I support Senator Kitt's call for a review of the school transport system. Fewer than 12 months ago, the House asked for a review so that the tragedy in Meath would not be repeated. A terrible tragedy took place in Clara, County Offaly, yesterday. Our sympathy goes out to the family, the students and the community at large in Offaly. A hidden factor that contributed to this tragic loss was...

Seanad: Irish Language: Motion. (5 Apr 2006)

Ulick Burke: I move: That Seanad Éireann: —noting that our young people receive 1,500 hours of education in the Irish language throughout their schooling, at an estimated cost of €500 million per annum; —recognising that Irish is the only subject that all students are required to take after the junior certificate examination; —deeply concerned at the fact that, in spite of this situation, many...

Seanad: Irish Language: Motion. (5 Apr 2006)

Ulick Burke: The statistics are there to prove that the greater number of people achieve higher standards in higher level French or other modern languages than they do in Irish, our own native language. Therefore something is wrong. The proposals of Fine Gael are that we would, first, give far greater resources at primary level and improve the facilities for teacher training at that level. Good work has...

Seanad: Irish Language: Motion. (5 Apr 2006)

Ulick Burke: The Minister of State can contradict the numbers for as long as he wants, but I do not think the census statistics lie. It is important to note the three real ideas that Deputy Kenny is looking to have in place, namely, reform, renewal and revival. Anybody misinterpreting them and stating otherwise is wrong. The idea of revival is important. Deputy Kenny proposed that after the junior...

Ulick Burke: Very reluctantly.

Ulick Burke: It should be corrected.
