James Reilly: It is before me. Since the hospital was full, she was asked to go to the Mater Hospital. It was also full, so the ambulance took her to St. James's Hospital, which refused her admission because it had not been officially informed that Beaumont Hospital was off call. She was referred to Tallaght Hospital, whichââ

- Challenges facing the Health Service: Statements (10 Mar 2009)
James Reilly: I thank the Minister for this debate. As she points out, although I welcome the opportunity to discuss the health service, it is premature in view of the upcoming budget. It is important that we have a follow-up debate after the Minister has deliberated and made her determinations on what is and is not to be cut. I will set out the areas in which cuts should not be made, in which they have...
- Challenges facing the Health Service: Statements (10 Mar 2009)
James Reilly: Has that been analysed? It seems a lot of money. I would have thought it was more like â¬500 million, but if the Minister has facts to show otherwise I would be delighted to hear them, because it makes our task in the future much easier. We cannot have a debate on the health service today without acknowledging that we did not just arrive here out of the blue. The same Minister has been in...

I hope she will be able to share her sources with the House to back that up. How many new consultant posts, rather than new consultants, will there be? I am not interested in hearing about how many consultants will retire...

- Challenges facing the Health Service: Statements (10 Mar 2009)
James Reilly: I ask the Minister to forgive me for smiling earlier but Deputy Dooley appeared to be having a minor "Paul Gogarty moment" behind her. I do not intend to reopen the mid-west issue. It is quite clear from the Teamwork report that certain continuances were to be put in place prior to the services being moved. This has not been done. With regard to recruiting consultants, the Minister pointed...

James Reilly: I am also conscious of time. This debate is about the health cutbacks and the HSE generally. More than 100,000 people work in it and it is not delivering. Regardless of what the Minister's colleagues state, all 320 people who are lying on trolleys today know that it is not working. People waiting for colonoscopies for as long as Susie Long did know it.
