Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Electoral (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2014: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2017)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I am not trying to dictate to the committee but, in view of the possible short-day polling, it would be important to get the opinions of the islanders. We could have a short session with Comhdháil Oileáin na hÉireann, which is very organised, to tease out its views on this remaining issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Electoral (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2014: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2017)

Éamon Ó Cuív: People can engage and still do what they intended doing from the beginning. I was environment Minister for the 2011 election. Clearly I could not interfere because that was their legal right and, therefore, they had the discretion to make the call. To believe that we did not...

Éamon Ó Cuív: Ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas a dhéanamh leis an Aire tar éis dó bheith ceaptha mar Aire Forbartha Tuaithe agus Pobail. I would like to congratulate the Minister on his appointment. Éamon Ó Cuív: The problem also applied to the Minister's time at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. It had totally underspent and totally undersanctioned long before the Minister's Department was set up. It would have wound up with the same underspend as the Minister's new Department. With all due respect, the Minister was the Minister of State in that Department...
